Virtual assistants have evolved through four generations over the past 20 years. Early VAs were reactive and task-focused, while current VAs are more conversational and can access third-party content. Future VAs will be proactive, anticipating user needs through advances in natural language processing and artificial intelligence. Business models are also shifting from paid apps to revenue sharing from advertising and third-party services. Handset manufacturers and cloud companies will play a larger role.
