Overview of UPR Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Based in the United Nations Human Rights Council Every UN member is reviewed NZ reviewed in 2009 Involved consideration of three documents: National Report, UN prepared compilation of NZ human rights situation and summary of stakeholder information 64 recommendations made to New Zealand 3 Universal Periodic Review
4. Outcomes from New Zealand’s Review Of the 64 recommendations made to New Zealand: 33 were accepted 12 were agreed to with discussion 11 had a qualified response 8 were rejected 4 Universal Periodic Review
5. Work since Review Important initiatives: In April 2010, New Zealand indicated its support for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (recs 8, 9 and 10). The New Zealand Curriculum for schools now makes explicit reference to cultural diversity (rec 36). Parliament repealed the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004 and enacted the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011 (rec 58). 5 Universal Periodic Review
6. Ongoing work (2) New courthouse design standards require the separation of defendants by age (rec 49). The Child and Family Protection Bill will allow New Zealand to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography (recs 3 and 15). Police Safety Orders allow for an alleged perpetrator of family violence to be removed from the family home for up to five days (rec 53). 6 Universal Periodic Review
7. Ongoing work (2) Ka Hikitia - Managing for Success, The Māori Education Strategy 2008-2012 sets the Government’s policy targets and approaches to Māori educational achievement (rec 31). The Whānau Ora Programme seeks to deliver social and health services and opportunities to whānau and families across New Zealand through non-government agencies. (recs 30 and 61). Addressing the Drivers of Crime is a major work programme led by the Ministry of Justice to address the drivers of crime, including work to prioritise Māori. (rec 32). 7 Universal Periodic Review
