Book Base: Exactly The Opposite by: Tana Hoban Concept: Opposites Before Reading: I would introduce the book by suggesting some words to my students such as "stop" and "go" or "short" and "tall". I would tell my students that these words are called opposites and ask them if they could think of any other opposites. (I might help them by suggesting one word such as "hot" and have them come up with "cold" on their own.) During Reading: I would have students think of other opposites that could be applied to the birds in the story. An example would include how on the "fancy/plain" page, one bird is big and one bird is small. After Reading: The students would be responsible for creating their own page for an opposite book that we would put together as a class. I would change the theme so that it would be about something other than birds, such as have them create a story about dogs. The ideas aren't limited to animals.
