2. Welcome from your chairman
IT SEEMS as if 2013 has been a far ‘emptier’ year than 2012 – no Jubilee, no Olympics, nothing
really to grab the imagination; a year of consolidation, of clearing-up. It’s as if the long drawn-out
winter and spring have delayed the start of everything, and the world is only just waking up.
Perhaps the dull feeling is because there is little to celebrate.
Last year, we were subjects of a Queen of Britain, of a Commonwealth – envied by others, not just
for the photo opportunities of processions, but because we were part of a larger whole and could
feel that we had been part of it for much of our lives. How can nations that elect their leaders feel
this continuity?
Deep inside me, there is a republican voice, but I have to acknowledge that there is sense in an
unelected ‘ruler’, someone outside the political merry-go-round, who just ‘is’. And while many dislike
sport and the emphasis placed on national pride, the Olympics at least enabled us to bask in
reflected glory, and, astonishingly for such an insular nation, to enjoy the exploits of other nations as
well.
We were part of a global nation for a time.
This year has been different – economic crises, weather tragedies, political farces, horrible deaths,
all with no easy solution and little compensating happiness. It seems to have induced in us a rose-
tinted view of the past. Last year, the present was rose-tinted; this year, we have once more
invented a past that was never really there, when everything was more certain, more clear.
Nostalgia is quite fun, it’s pleasant to believe we once had the answers to all the problems
(forgetting that if we’d had the answers then, we wouldn’t have the problems now!). But it won’t help
us to live. We have to re-invent every few years the ‘glues’ that hold us together.
Glues like work – when jobs were there for the most part, when it wasn’t 24/7 on duty, when
changing jobs was a serious decision, not a necessity. Like our social and sporting lives – groups of
people who became friends through long association, not ‘speed-dating’ in haste just to get to know
others.
I suppose what I’m trying to say is that we have in U3A a new type of ‘glue’ that could work well; a
new social grouping that gives community, but respects individuality. It is up to us to make it work so
that nostalgia remains that pleasant, half remembered view of a hazy past and not an excuse for
not looking forward and living.

3. New Business Secretary
IF YOU came to the May meeting, you'll know that I had to announce that the committee has very
reluctantly accepted Jean Dalton's resignation from the position of Business Secretary for health
reasons. She made an invaluable contribution to the management of Mansfield U3A and we all
wish her a speedy recovery.
Linda Spray has volunteered to be co-opted to this important role until the
AGM in September and we hope she will then stand for election to serve until
2015. She's introduced herself on the website, where she wrote:
"Linda joined the U3A in October 2012 after a diverse career in
secretarial, training and other roles within Nottinghamshire County
Council. She retired in 2011. Looking for ‘retirement pastimes’ led her to
the U3A, which she now enjoys and participates in fully. She is now co-
ordinator of the new Art Interest group and is a regular Stroller."
Thank you and welcome Linda.

Recent Events
GOOD MORNING; Karen here on behalf of the Social Committee to say a HUGE thanks to
everyone who supported our recent Coffee Morning. As you know this is a fund raising event but is
also a great time for a chat with friends and a cuppa. Thanks to everyone who donated raffle and
tombola prizes; cakes and plants for the stalls; those who turned up on the day and spent
their money and everyone who helped on the day. WELL DONE TO YOU ALL.
Karen Troop.

4. OVER 100 members attended the annual coffee morning at The Towers that raised the magnificent
sum of £596 towards our funds.
The Coffee Morning has become a highlight in Mansfield U3A’s calendar and is a welcome
opportunity for members to meet and relax.
Our Social Committee had organised raffle and tombola prizes. Our green-fingered Gardening
Group sold plants and seeds to members who hoped for an improvement in the weather to enable
them to get out in the garden. Members of the Pudding Club had their usual tempting array of cakes
and goodies. One member successfully sold unwanted toys!
Last year’s coffee morning raised a record sum – this year’s was £5 short of that figure – a fantastic
achievement.
Our thanks to everyone who helped to make this event such a success, the Social Committee who
organised the event, the stallholders who stood and sold the merchandise, everyone who donated
prizes, plants, cakes, etc. and in particular to our members who turned up on the day and gave so
generously and made the event so enjoyable and successful.
The accounts are on the website.

Groups News (Check the Interest Group web pages for updates)
A Shufflers’ Expedition
ON FRIDAY 31st May, after days of rain and general misery, fortune favoured the righteous and the
sun shone on the Shufflers. No short trip this time, but a major expedition to Nottingham’s Wollaton
Hall, organised by the Senior Shuffler, Sylvia Slack.
As the Community bus swept up the drive to park right outside the Hall in the sunshine, many of us
realised we had not been there since the last time we could stagger without aid. Wollaton has been
restored; it now looks like Hardwick Hall on steroids (or acid), rather too ornate for my taste, even
though built earlier and by the same master mason.
As Nottingham’s ‘lung’, the park was crowded with families on half-term, yet the area is so large that
we did not feel hemmed-in by children or noise. A quick trip round the interior, much lighter and
better arranged that I recollect from the past, showed us the 19th Century alterations, although only
the Salon has any period furniture.
By now, the group of 16 had split up, to come together only when we returned to the bus at 3.00pm.
Some went to the café in the Courtyard, some walked the grounds to the Lake, some wandered the
rather beautiful gardens (though even these showed a lack to care associated with the cuts). I sat
looking out over the golf course eating the picnic lunch we had been told to bring.
Only too soon, we had to leave. A beautiful day in beautiful surroundings with no duties or jobs to do
– what could be better?
Our thanks to Sylvia for organising this.

Holidays
ROUND BRITAIN CRUISE
We arrived home on Monday 3rd June after our cruise round Britain. The weather was very kind to
us; better than we had dared to expect. Margaret's organisational skills ensured that everything
went very smoothly. A good time was had by all. Full report next month.
Norma Shillinglaw
Luncheon Club
APRIL saw us exploring The Countryman at Kirkby in Ashfield, which has had a make-over to
bring a more modern feel to this traditional, family-owned country pub. Sheila Whalley chose an
attractive menu with dishes priced individually from £9.00 for 2 courses. Most reports I heard
complemented the food and excellent, friendly service but portion sizes weren't outstanding.
Next, on 20th June, Mike Allen has arranged for us to have a foretaste of the future by visiting the
new West Notts College training restaurant 'refined', where students refine the cooking and
service skills they've been taught by contact with real customers. By all accounts, we're in for a
treat at a bargain price at just £4.50 for a main course, £5.95 for 2 courses or 3 for £7.50.
Over 40 places have been reserved already but it's a large room so you can still join the list if you
want. IF I know before the end of the June meeting.
Then, on 18th July we'll complete the season by returning to our Pub of the Year for 2011, The
Lion at Farnsfield, where John And Karen Troop have negotiated a good discount from their
normal prices for an attractive menu with dishes priced individually from £9.90 for two courses.
Bookings for all of these are open today.
We'll explore new ground on 19th September, after the holiday break, when Pauline and Ian
Boucher are taking us to Bestwood Lodge Hotel, a Victorian Hunting Lodge just north of
Nottingham.

Garden Visits
ON 17TH MAY, we visited beautiful Burton Agnes, built by Sir Henry Griffin in the early 17th
century and designed by Robert Smythson. He also designed Hardwick Hall and Wollaton Hall.
We had a guided tour of this exquisite Elizabethan Manor house that is filled with many treasures
including paintings, porcelain and furniture collected by the family over five generations.
Simon Cunliffe Lister and his family live in the Old Vicarage, next to the church and the original
Norman Manor house that was built in 1173.
10. Lawns surround the house and the award-winning gardens contain a maze, a potager, giant games
such as chess and snakes and ladders, a jungle garden, and more than four thousand plant
species. In the courtyard, there is a gift shop, a farm shop, plant sales, a café and an ice cream
parlour. There is also a gallery for local artists to exhibit their work.
The weather was kind – not a lot of sunshine but no rain!
Marion Thornton Photos on the website ...
Art Appreciation
FIFTEEN members of the Art Appreciation Group enjoyed their visit to the Walker Art Gallery in
Liverpool on 15th May. What a treat – Rubens, Gainsborough, Rembrandt and many, many more
wonderful works of art.
After a non-stop drive across the M62 we enjoyed coffee and cakes in the gallery before being met
by a curator who gave us a history of the building and its contents. This is particularly relevant to us
at present as we are just commencing a project on Art Galleries of the world.
The curator then took us on a tour of selected paintings,
explaining their significance to the gallery in particular and to
the Art World in general. Our tour ended with a visit to the
contemporary gallery that houses the winning exhibits of the
prestigious John Moores contemporary annual exhibition.
A short taxi drive took us to the Albert Docks where members
had a choice of museums, galleries and shops. The favourite
– the wonderful bronze life-size statue of Billy Fury on the
dockside. Some members came over all nostalgic for the
1960’s.
The only thing missing from our great day was the wonderful
Merseybeat sound.
Pauline Boucher More photos on the website ...
Digital World
THE WEATHER wasn't quite as ordered for on 24th May for a photographic treasure hunt at Vicar
Water but members still enjoyed looking for 12 subjects, photographing them and submitting them
for us to discuss at Skegby on 14th June. They were all easy to find and it was interesting to
compare interpretations and editing techniques.
Do come along to Stanton Hill Baptist Church at Skegby on any 2nd or 4th Friday (2.00 - 4.00) if
you have a digital camera of any kind and would like help to make better use of it.

Caravan and Motorhome Rally
WHAT GLORIOUS weather we had for the first Caravan and Motorhome Rally, at Swinethorpe just
outside of Lincoln on the weekend of May 31st to 3rd June. There were members of Mansfield,
Ashfield and Sherwood U3As, plus some friends.
We all introduced ourselves and then had a wonderful greeting by the Red Arrows. They gave us a
fly past. Twice.
As there is a fishing lake there, the men soon got out their fishing rods etc. Dave, my husband, had
not fished for at least 40 years but soon got the hang of it. Linda fashioned him a hat! (Out of a
hankie as he had forgotten his.) We girls lazed in the sun and left them to it.
11. There were often shouts of "where is a camera?"; you knew then another one had been caught.
That evening we got together in the room that had been provided for us and discussed what we all
would like to do for the weekend, with a drink or two; well maybe three or four!
Saturday dawned yet even more lovely weather; the men
started fishing; some went walking; so 4 of us ladies went
shopping. (Don't take Avril to a garden centre!). Linda and I
bought shoes. That evening we went to Lincoln to go on a
Ghost walk when many a tale was told by our guide. (You
can believe or not, but it was very eerie and he gave us all a
sticker to put by our beds to protect us.)
Sunday morning and we returned to Lincoln to do a treasure
trail to find William Conqueror's murderer. We had a list of
weapons and suspects, with clues around Lincoln. We split
into ladies v. men and needless to say we ladies won. Or we
will think we did.
We collected our cars and drove to the pub nearby for
sandwiches and a drink. Needless to say when we got back
the men fished and we ladies read and sunbathed. That
evening we BBQed but we hadn't got ours so Peter and Avril
shared theirs with us. Later that evening we played UNO.
Monday morning dawned as it was time to start packing to leave one by one, leaving just 3 vans
and there in the sky we got yet another fly past by the Red Arrows. I would like to think they tipped
their wings to us to say goodbye.
We all look forward to the next one and thank you Terry and Linda for organising it.

please come along.

Reflections from the Committee Table
ON BEING A GROUPS CO-ORDINATOR
I had been a U3A member for a few years and appreciated how much work is required by the
committee to keep it running smoothly – well more or less.
In September 2012 I thought it was time I tried to help with the task. I chose to be the Group Co-
ordinator, taking over from Glenis Carr, a hard act to follow.
We all have some life skills to offer to the U3A and mine was organising and following things
through, by sometimes devious means.
We have added some new groups since earlier this year. All these have been a challenge, but the
end results are usually very satisfying.
I would recommend to anyone that they become a committee member. I have met more people
more quickly than I ever did as a member in the audience. The committee keeps your mind active
and gives additional purpose to the few hours a week I have to spare.

Speakers' Corner
OUR SPEAKER today is Jane Barnes who will be telling Tales from a Farmer's Wife.
Jane lives on a 220-acre grassland farm near Melton Mowbray. She will tell anecdotes and tales
about their herd of 125 Ayrshire cows and two bulls – Diesel and Ferdinande! Her talk will also
explain the challenges faced by farmers in the 21st century and their diversification.
All the milk from their farm goes to the Long Clawson Dairies where it's made into world famous
Blue Stilton cheese. Jane will be bringing some samples to try at the end of her talk!
Jane has also appeared on East Midlands Today talking about Lady Shamrock so we may also
learn more about her today.
