These slides use ideas from my (Jeff Funk) class to develop a business model for Samsung’s smart watch. Its smart watch works with Samsung’s mobile phone to enable users to more quickly and easily access information. In the future, its smart watch is expected to perform many of the functions that its mobile phones now do. These slides analyze athletes, the elderly, youth, and travelers as potential customers for Samsung’s smart watch. It describes several scenarios under which these users can obtain value from the watch now and in the future.
Wearables devices market and technologyKevin Huang
What is wearable technology?
Simply put, it’s technology that you incorporate into things you wear on a day-to-day basis, and it could be anything from a smart watch, augmented reality glasses, or even a personal health monitor in the form of a bracelet.
The idea is that technology will increasingly become more part of our daily lives, and it will become less intrusive, as it will be part of our clothing, and sometimes even part of our bodies!
Wearable tech presents a fascinating field to study. I have conducted some researches and hope you can also learn more about this high growth market.
The document summarizes the history and features of smartwatches. It notes that the idea originated from Dick Tracy's communicating watch in comics in the 1940s. Early smartwatches were introduced in 2004 but discontinued by 2008. Modern smartwatches allow users to access news, weather, sports and messages from their wrist and receive phone calls and text messages without their phone. They also track health and fitness metrics like calories burned and heart rate. While useful, smartwatches must be synced with a user's cell phone to function.
Smartwatches have evolved from simple devices that displayed limited information like calendars and phone connectivity to full-fledged computers on the wrist. Early smartwatches in the 2000s had basic features while models in the 2010s could make calls, send texts, access the internet, and track health data. Modern smartwatches often use touchscreens, pair with smartphones for full functionality, and focus on fitness tracking and health monitoring. Top brands today include Android Wear watches and upcoming models like the Apple Watch, with pricing ranging from $100 to $400. However, smartwatches have yet to achieve mass popularity due to issues with size, battery life, and being perceived more as tech devices than fashion accessories.

The Apple Watch is a smartwatch that operates as a small wearable computing device worn on a user's wrist. It became available for pre-order on April 10th and sold close to one million units on the first day in the US. The cheapest Apple Watch Sport model costs £299, though it only costs Apple £55 to build, and prices increase based on materials and customization. The Apple Watch works by pairing with an iPhone to push Apple Watch-specific content and notifications to the user's wrist, and it utilizes a Retina touchscreen display and Digital Crown for navigation and apps.
Recently, Motorola released it's new smart watch, the Moto 360. Even more recently Apple announced that it's now dipping its own feet into the smartwatch industry.
As the list of ever-expanding smartwatches increases, we find ourselves asking which one is the best. Apple has clearly shown it can fit a lot into that tiny watch, but how does it stand up against the Moto 360 and vice versa.
In our most recent infographic we approach this question and provide a basic outline of each, ultimately creating THE SMARTWATCH SHOWDOWN.
Enjoy!

Find out how Tiktok onboards their users - the good sides and the bad. Tiktok's become one of the largest social networks in the world, but since the start they've had strong financial backing, so have they prioritised sign up conversion and retention, or did they focus more on marketing?
I wanted to find out, so I went on their sign up journey. Tiktok started with a high school audience, where virality is easy once you've reached that critical mass tipping point. School mates show each other how the app works. But a majority of Tiktok's users are now over 24, so will the app make sense for them? Flip through the presentation to find out.

1) The document discusses the importance of Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) and First Time User Experience (FTUE) for new products. It argues that users do not read manuals and that the initial experiences shape users' perceptions.
2) The author describes a negative personal experience with an alcohol tester, where not reading the manual led to breaking the product. This is contrasted with positive OOBE/FTUE examples like the Kindle.
3) Several principles for good OOBE/FTUE are discussed, like minimizing setup steps, providing guidance through the initial use, and giving samples before requiring full engagement/registration.

Thumbtack's mobile onboarding flow takes less than 7 minutes to set up an account and create a first project. It uses high contrast screens and clear next steps to guide the user through the process. The flow incorporates project creation into account setup for a seamless experience. However, some users may feel anxious because the project is submitted without preview or editing. Allowing previews and edits could improve the process. Overall, Thumbtack's intuitive design and use of color make the onboarding pleasant, but it could reduce anxiety by giving users more control over their project submission.
The document provides a review of the Apple Watch after 4 days of use. It discusses both positive aspects like the intuitive interface, activity tracking, and induction charging. However, it also notes major pain points including over-reliance on the iPhone, poor Bluetooth connectivity that drains the iPhone's battery, limited usefulness of notifications and apps, and a high price point for the utility provided. Overall, the reviewer finds the Apple Watch to have low utility when not connected to an iPhone and prefers using tasks on the iPhone instead of the Watch.

This document summarizes the author's experience using the Everlane app as a new user. The author critiques various aspects of the app design and user experience. Key points noted include that the app store images did not clearly communicate what the app was for, there were many negative reviews indicating bugs, the app focused more on community than quick purchases, and opportunities were missed to further engage the user after checkout. Overall, the author provides helpful design suggestions while also praising some elements, like the wardrobe recommendation feature.

The document describes several potential problems the student may face during their project and how they plan to address them. Some problems include their computer or iPad breaking and losing work, falling behind on work, apps not working properly, and accidentally deleting files. The student plans to back up their work regularly using cloud storage and USB drives to prevent loss of data. They also intend to stick to a strict schedule to avoid falling behind. The document then discusses experiments the student conducted to improve their animation skills, including a running cycle, jumping, and fighting stance. They analyzed reference videos and drew each frame in their art style on an iPad app. The experiments helped practice techniques but also revealed areas for future improvement.

1. The document describes an experiment where 7 people spent a day with a paper prototype Apple Watch and were asked to come up with ideas for potential apps.
2. Each person came up with an idea based on something they were frustrated by or needed help with in their daily lives. The ideas focused on tasks, transportation, taking screenshots, recipes, music, keys, and driving.
3. The summary at the end reflects that while people may not initially see the need for a smartwatch, spending time with one helped generate useful app ideas tailored to their individual lives and frustrations.
The document discusses Lookout's mobile app onboarding experience. It shows how Lookout introduces key features and value propositions to users before requesting necessary permissions. Lookout presents features like finding a lost phone using location and sound first to prime users on the app's value. It then shows how requested permissions like location access directly enable these presented features. This approach of tying permissions to demonstrated value helps users understand why access is needed.
Evernote is used by the author to manage documents, receipts, notes and information in a paperless system. Key points:
- Evernote allows documents, notes, receipts and information to be scanned, uploaded or dragged into the cloud-based system for access from any device.
- The author uses specific notebooks and tags to organize information by topic and shares some folders with others.
- In addition to basic document storage, the author integrates Evernote with the Getting Things Done productivity method and uses it to back up computer files and share emergency contact information.
