1. Smoking is a hard habit to break because
tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly
addictive. Like heroin or other addictive
drugs, the body and mind quickly become so
used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a
person needs to have it just to feel normal.
People start smoking for a variety of different
reasons. Some think it looks cool. Others
start because their family members or
friends smoke. Statistics show that about 9
out of 10 tobacco users start before they're
18 years old. Most adults who started
smoking in their teens never expected to
become addicted. That's why people say it's
just so much easier to not start smoking at
all.
What Is Smokeless Tobacco?
Smokeless tobacco, also called spit tobacco,
chewing tobacco, chew, chaw, dip, plug, and
probably a few other things, comes in two
forms: snuff and chewing tobacco.
2. Snuff is a fine-grain tobacco that often comes
in teabag-like pouches that users "pinch" or
"dip" between their lower lip and gum.
Chewing tobacco comes in shredded, twisted,
or "bricked" tobacco leaves that users put
between their cheek and gum.
Smoking can undo the effect of any controller
medicine you're taking. It also can force you
to use your rescue medicine more often. It
can also disturb your sleep by making you
cough more at night and can affect how well
you perform in sports or other physical
activities. Worst of all, it can send you to the
emergency department with a severe asthma
flare-up.
