2. INDIAN RAILWAYS, the premier transport organization of the country is the largest rail network in Asia and the world’s second largest under one management. The first railway on Indian sub-continent ran over a stretch of 21 miles from Bombay to Thane. The formal inauguration ceremony was performed on 16th April 1853. In 1951 the systems were nationalized as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world.
3. Eastern Railway was formed on 14 th April, 1952 by integration of the East Indian Railway consisting of Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol and Danapur Divisions and the entire Bengal – Nagpur Railway. Now Indian Railway divided in 16 zones, Eastern Railway is One of them.

The Public Relations Department of Eastern Railway is engaged in the task of continuously building and sustaining the positive image of Eastern Railway in particular and Indian Railways in general. He maintains close rapport with the mass media including Newspapers, T.V, Networks, etc. and ensures a two way communication between the railway administration and the public.
