SULEIMAN THE MAGNIFICENT
EARLY LIFE
Suleiman’s father was Selim the first. His mother was valide
sultan who died in 1534. Suleiman was born on November 6,
1494, in Trabzon, Turkey. His father was sultan at the time. At
age seven Suleiman was sent to study science, history, literature,
theology, and military tactics. As a young boy, Suleiman had an
interest in Alexander the Great. When Suleiman reached the
age of 17, he was appointed governor of first Kaffa(Theodosia)
and then Surukhan(Manisa). When his father died in 1520,
Suleiman became sultan at age 26.
AS SULTAN
Suleiman was the tenth and longest reigning sultan
of the Ottoman empire. He was known as Suleiman
the Magnificent in the west and Suleiman the Lawgiver
or Kanuni in the east. He conquered many countries
and was a great military leader.
CONQUESTS
    As Sultan, Suleiman conquered
many other countries. He personally
led 13 military campaigns. In 1521 he
conquered Belgrade. He also
conquered Hungary in 1526. Suleiman
went to war for the last time at age 72
in Vienna where he died.
SULEIMAN’S MILITARY
    Suleiman’s military was amazing. He
conquered many countries with the help of his
armies. The reason it was so great was because
there was never any arguments because he led
his army personally. The soldiers had to listen to
the sultan, end of story. He also kept his army
equipped with the latest weapons. His army was
always well trained and organized, giving him a
greater advantage over other armies. Although
his army was huge, there were no women.
TODAY’S MILITARY
Today’s military is equipped with the latest
weaponry, like Suleiman’s army, and has air force as well
as ground soldiers. Unlike Suleiman’s army, there are
multiple military leaders. There are generals, cadets and
different ranks, whereas in Suleiman’s army, there were
only two ranks, Sultan and soldiers. Both types of
military are efficient. Yet today, there are both men and
women in our military.
PARENTAL MILITARY
          INFLUENCE
In Suleiman’s time, if your father was in the army, so were
you, that is, if you were a boy. Suleiman followed his father by
leading his armies and finished raiding the countries his father
had not yet defeated. Today, children don’t have to go into
the military if their parents were. But, having a parent in the
army may influence a child to follow their parents and be as
wonderful as they were.
THANK YOU =)
I know you all learned a lot about Suleiman and his
great army. Him and his army made a huge influence on
our military today. He was born to be magnificent and he
pulled through for his father and for his idol, Alexander the
Great. He was a wonderful military leader, father, and sultan
as well. He brought wealth and happiness to his country.
You can now see why I chose Suleiman as my Big Idea.
