2. 8 “To
the angel of the church in Smyrna write:
These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died
and came to life again. 9 I know your afflictions and your poverty—
yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews
and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not be afraid of
what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of
you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten
days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the
crown of life.
11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second
death.

18. Lessons from Smyrna: Faithfulness in
Persecution
• Be at peace in the midst of storms – God is in control
(Mark 4:35-41; Acts 27:25; Daniel 6:21-23; Revelation
14:12)
19. Acts 27: 13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they
thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they
weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. 14 Before
very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the “northeaster,”
swept down from the island. 15 The ship was caught by the
storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it
and were driven along. 16 As we passed to the lee of a small
island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat
secure.
20. 17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, they passed ropes under
the ship itself to hold it together. Fearing that they would run
aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor
and let the ship be driven along. 18 We took such a violent
battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw
the cargo overboard. 19 On the third day, they threw the ship’s
tackle overboard with their own hands. 20 When neither sun nor
stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we
finally gave up all hope of being saved.
21. 21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up
before them and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice not
to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this
damage and loss. 22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage,
because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.
23 Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve
stood beside me 24 and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must
stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the
lives of all who sail with you.’ 25 So keep up your courage, men, for
I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

Persecution
• Be at peace in the midst of storms – God is in control
(Mark 4:35-41; Acts 27:25; Daniel 6:21-23; Revelation

• Keep our eyes focused on Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:2-3)
23. Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and
perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him
endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at
the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who
endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will
not grow weary and lose heart.

• Present suffering future glory (Rom. 8: 28-30)
25. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the
good of those who love him, who have been called according to
his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to
be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those he predestined,
he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he
justified, he also glorified.
