2. Dental Implants
§ No A-list celeb would be caught dead with visible missing teeth! Implants
are the procedure of choice for replacing a tooth that has to be removed
due to cavity, gum disease or traumatic injury. Patients with missing teeth
are vulnerable to gum disease, loss of bone and potentially negative
changes in facial structure. Dental implants provide an innovative way to
minimize or eliminate these and other problems, while restoring function
and beauty to patients’ smiles.
§ Unlike traditional treatments for tooth loss, such as dentures and bridges,
dental implants are actually fused to the jawbone, providing the most
durable, long-lasting way to replace missing teeth. Implants are now
considered to be “state-of the-art” and the “new standard of care” in
dentistry for replacing missing teeth.
3. Dental Implants
How does the procedure work?
§ Getting dental implants is a multi-step process beginning with the
surgical placement of titanium posts into the jawbone under
anesthesia. This procedure is usually performed by an oral surgeon
or periodontist (gum specialist).
§ After several months of healing, these posts will have permanently
fused to the jaw, enabling them to function like the roots of natural
teeth. Next, your cosmetic dentist will make a putty molding of
the implant and send it to the dental lab to order a custom made
crown that attaches to the titanium posts.
4. Dental Implants
What are the pros and cons?
§ Every dental procedure comes with a list of pros and cons. Here are my
thoughts concerning the pros and cons of dental implants:
§
§
Pros: Unlike bridges and removable dentures, implants stand on their own and are
not connected to or supported by surrounding teeth. Like your natural teeth, you
can floss and clean normally around your implant. Specially designed to match the
color and appearance of the rest of your smile, dental implants look, feel and
function just like natural teeth. Also, replacing the tooth with an implant helps
preserve the bone in the area of the extraction.
Cons: Implants are the most costly option for replacing missing teeth. Because
implants are surgically placed, the procedure is more invasive. If you are looking
for a quick option for replacing your teeth for a special occasion, then implants are
not your option. This procedure is more time-intensive than the alternative options
of bridges and removable dentures.
5. Dental Implants
How much will it cost?
§
Dental implants (including the crowns that screw into the implant) can vary in price depending on
what region of the country you live. They can range from $2,000 up to $3,500 for each implant.
Will insurance cover this procedure?
§
Implants are generally not fully covered by dental insurance. The rules for each insurance plan
may differ depending on the benefits package that you choose. Typically, insurance companies do
not cover the implant surgery.
§
If your plan offers benefits for major services such as teeth replacements and crowns, they may
cover your dental implants. If you want to be certain of the benefits offered by your plan before
starting your work, your dentist may be willing to submit a letter with x-rays to your insurance to
get a pre-authorization of the procedure with fees that they will pay as well as fees that will be due
by you.
6. Dental Implants
How long will it last?
§
Implants are permanent fixtures that can last a lifetime. Just like your natural teeth,
implants must be cared for properly. Bacterial plaque and tarter can affect the bone
surrounding the implant and cause it to loosen and fail. Daily brushing and flossing
will help keep your implant stabilized. Your dental team can monitor the success of
your implant during your routine dental visits for a professional cleaning and exam.

A-List Advice:
§
Don’t stop with these blog posts. Obviously, there is much more to learn than you can
find here – or in any one resource – about all of these various dental products and
procedures. So go to the library, visit dental websites and order brochures straight from
the manufacturer in order to know everything you possibly can about every procedure
you’re interested in getting.
