§
So a few months later the Fresh Fest Concert came to Saginaw, MI, it was in a big
arena about the size of Madison Square Garden. In my head I thought, “Hey, I know
Russell Simmons, so I’m going to go backstage and say ‘Hello.’ ” Who did I think I
was?
§
After the concert, I went to the security guard who was guarding backstage and I took
out the business card of “my friend” Russell Simmons and said “I’m here to meet
Russell Simmons – Run DMC’s manager; see I have his card!”
§
I flashed it to the guard and he said, “Oh, okay... come on back!” I couldn’t believe
that it worked! I didn’t actually run into “my friend” this time, but I met and took
pictures with the rap legends the Fat Boys and Whodini. That was huge for me at 12
years old, and one of the highlights of a period in my life where I didn’t always have
confidence. (Little did I know the art of meeting celebs would soon come in handy.)

§ I had noticed when I was younger that my teeth were different. There
were spaces where there shouldn’t be, noticeable ones; they just didn’t
come in like my friends’ teeth. When you’re in elementary school, you’re
prepared to be called “snaggle tooth” as you lose your baby teeth and get
the big teeth. But my teeth were different and I knew it. (But when I look
back at my young photos, I was always smiling.)
§ When did the smiling stop? When did those spaces in my teeth start to
feel like a barrier between myself and the rest of the kids? I think when I
started to develop into a “little woman” in middle school and high
school; then I really started to feel a bit self-conscious about my looks,
particularly my smile.

§ But what could I do? At that time, or so I thought, braces were out
of the question. I knew that my mom didn’t have the money to
afford braces, so I was pretty much prepared to live with my
imperfect smile. It wasn’t until my family dentist asked me how I
felt about my smile that I confided that I wasn’t happy with it at
all. Thank God, he shared my feelings with my mom. Knowing
that my smile bothered me all my life and remembering how I’d
been teased by kids (they called me “Bugs Bunny”), my mother
decided to make the sacrifice.

§ And so at 15, I got braces! I was the first of my friends to get
braces and everyone was happy for me. Even though they hurt like
heck, I wore them proudly. At first I was self-conscious. I thought
that maybe guys wouldn’t like me as much with braces, but I still
had IT! It took a month or so to get used to the food always getting
stuck in my teeth! The good thing is that I became a teeth freak. I
brushed more than ever because I never wanted to walk up to the
cute guy in school, smile at him, and have an Egg McMuffin stuck
in my teeth!

§ Even though I was wearing braces, I was still a nice looking young
lady with a good personality. I knew that I only had to wear braces
for a year, so each month was like a countdown for me. Each
month you could see my spaces getting smaller and smaller and
the transformation was encouraging.
§ The makeover was gradual, but striking; inch by inch, my front
teeth weren’t so prominent and gradually the rest of my mouth
caught up with them. I was amazed; my whole face changed with
the alignment, as did my attitude. While it took awhile for me to
regain my natural sense of pride and self-esteem, by the time I
graduated high school I was voted “prettiest smile.”
