§ According to June M. Lay M.S., founder and director of The Nutrition
Center located in New York City, “Social psychology research bears out
that facial expressions do reflect our inner feelings, and changing our
facial expression can help to change our feelings, too. The results of
studies show that different facial expressions are accompanied by changes
in physiological activity. In other words, when we smile we cannot feel
angry, for instance, at the exact moment we are smiling! It appears to be
physiologically impossible.”
§ The fact of the matter is that insecurity is really fear in disguise; fear that
we’re not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough, not
successful or worthy or rich or attractive or tall or short enough.

§ I’ll never forget how insecure I felt before getting braces at 15. Even
though I was able to con my way into Run DMC’s dressing room and
flash Russell Simmons’s business card to gain backstage access to one of
the ’80s best hip-hop concerts, those confident and blissful moments were
few and far between. Inside I was second-guessing every move, every
outfit, every hairstyle, every comment; all because of how the kids at
school made me feel.
§ It’s one thing to let others make you feel insecure; it’s quite another when
that insecurity spills over and takes over how you think about yourself.
Why? Because we have enough negative thoughts every day; we don’t
need a single one more. Especially the kind that makes us so anxious we
limit our lives.

§ That’s right; insecurity is fear and fear kills hopes, dreams, thoughts,
accomplishments and goals. When we are fearful, we doubt ourselves; when
we doubt ourselves, we give up on things before we even try. Insecurity – fear
– makes us avoid asking out that cute guy in Accounting, makes us skip
speaking to the boss about that big promotion or even trying out for that new
job in the first place. Don’t let a simple thing like your smile rob you of life’s
greatest opportunities.
