This document provides lesson objectives and instructions for an activity analyzing character motives. It includes a T-chart for students to fill out with inferences about the character Chang's motives for getting his mother's wok back. Students are prompted to include their inferences about Chang's actions, traits, thoughts, and words in the chart. The document then introduces vocabulary words with examples and prompts students to discuss times they have experienced those words. 2. Objective I will be able to use inferences to write the character’s motive into a T-chart. Create this T-chart in your notes section

3. Objective The motive is the reason why someone does something. For example, what is your motive for doing your homework? Answer to your partner

4. Objective To figure out someone’s motive, we look at a few different things. Here are the clues (inferences) we can use to figure out motive:

5. Objective – Character Motive Character’s Actions– what is this person doing? How are they acting? Try it! What are 2 things that Chang did to get his mother’s wok back? Write it in your chart.

6. Objective – Character Motive Character’s Traits – what is this person like? How would you describe them? Try it! Use 3 adjectives to describe Chang from last week’s story.Write it in your chart.

7. Objective – Character Motive There are a few other things you can look at to find the motive as well. The character’s thoughts. The character’s words. Write one in your chart.

11. RELENTED A PERSON WHO HAS AGREED TO SOMETHING HE OR SHE ONCE REFUSED Synonym: concede, cave in, surrender “No, No, No.” “Ok, Fine.” “Fine, I’ll do it. Tell your partner a time you relented to do something.

12. FAZE BOTHER OR CONFUSE Synonym: annoy, discomfort “Huh?”

13. INFURIATED TO FEEL EXTREMELY ANGRY Synonym: mad, furious Look at your partner and make a face of a furious person.

14. DISHEARTENED FEEL DISAPPOINTED AND LESS HOPEFUL Synonym: crushed, depressed “Why me?” Can you think of a time when you felt disheartened? Tell you partner about that time.

15. IMPASSABLE A ROAD OR PATH THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TRAVEL ON Synonym: blocked, obstructed
