Fibromyalgia and its management
by cupping therapy
2. Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is not well understood by the medical
community. It is known, though, that certain
people are more at risk of developing
fibromyalgia than others. The symptoms of
fibromyalgia can include everything from
widespread pain to fatigue; menstrual pain to
sleep disturbances. Because of the variety of
fibromyalgia symptoms, there are a number of
associated conditions linked to fibromyalgia.
3. Fibromyalgia is a disorder of unknown etiology
characterized by widespread pain, abnormal pain
processing, sleep disturbance, fatigue and often
psychological distress. People with fibromyalgia may also
have other symptoms; such as:
Morning stiffness
Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
Headaches, including migraines
Irritable bowel syndrome
Sleep disturbances
Cognitive problems with thinking and memory
(sometimes called "fibro fog")
Problems with thinking and memory
Painful menstrual periods and other pain syndromes
4. The prevalence of fibromyalgia is about
2%, affecting an estimated 5.0 million adults in
2005. Prevalence was much higher among
women than men (3.4% versus 0.5%). Taken
reference from www.cdc.govt/arthritis access on
dated 27 may 2013.
5. Diagnosis and Test
Currently there are no laboratory tests available for
diagnosing fibromyalgia. Doctors must rely on
patient histories, self-reported symptoms, a
physical examination and an accurate manual
tender point examination. This exam is based on
the standardized American College of
Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. Proper
implementation of the exam determines the
presence of multiple tender points at
characteristic locations.
6. To meet the fibromyalgia criteria for diagnosis, patients must
have:
A. Widespread pain in all four quadrants of the
body for a minimum of three months
B. At least 11 of the 18 specified tender points
The 18 sites used for the fibromyalgia diagnosis
cluster around the neck, shoulder, chest, hip,
knee, and elbow regions. The finger pressure that
your doctor must apply to these areas during an
exam is just enough to cause the nail bed to
blanch or become white.
7.
8. Alternative Treatment:
Alternative therapies are becoming more and more
popular for fibromyalgia sufferers. Why? Because
they work. And the good news is that most of the
alternative therapies don’t come along with the
nasty side effects that a lot of the conventional
medications do. But it is important that do
research as there are a lot of alternative therapies
out there as well. So, let’s take a look at what
need to know about cupping therapy so know if it
is a viable option.
9. A study conducted by Cao H, Hu H, Colagiuri
B, Liu J. (Center for Evidence-Based Chinese
Medicine, Beijing University of Chinese
Medicine, Beijing, China) entitled as Medicinal
cupping therapy in 30 patients with fibromyalgia:
a case series observation concluded that
Medicinal cupping therapy was associated with a
reduction in fibromyalgia symptoms for both pain
ratings and number of tender points.
10. what is cupping therapy?
Cupping therapy involves applying glass
cups, hence the name, to the skin in order to help
your body rid itself of toxins, pain, and increase
circulation. I know this sounds a little weird for us
to grasp but so did acupuncture when it was first
introduced to the West. With cupping each glass
is placed on various spots on body and acts as a
vacuum through heat and are left on body for
about 15 minutes.
14. The Benefits of Cupping
Whether or not are suffering from symptoms of
pain or muscle stiffness, cupping is a great
therapy. It provides numerous benefits including:
improved circulation and blood flow
toxin release
faster healing of muscles, ligaments, and tendons
It also works to reduce pain and soften stiff
muscles and tissues.
15. Cupping Therapy for Fibromyalgia
Cupping therapy is especially beneficial for people
suffering from fibromyalgia. If anyone suffering
fibromyalgia, he know how tender his muscles
and joints are. Even a vigorous massage can
send his body into spasm. Cupping, however, is a
non-irritating type of treatment. It will not
exacerbate muscle pain in anyway, or compound
any of fibromyalgia symptoms.
16. It is especially good for:
reducing trigger points
increasing muscle flexibility and range of motion
decreasing anxiety and depression
17. Cupping is a safe treatment for fibromyalgia when it
is done by someone who is qualified. Never try this
by yourself at home. Find a qualified massage
therapist or visit a holistic treatment center. Cupping
can provide great benefits to you and help in your
overall healing of the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
If you are suffering from chronic pain from a variety
of sources, this form of cupping may be the
alternative treatment that your body requires in order
to regain balance.
18. Contra-indications For Cupping
cupping therapy is not ideal for everyone, or for
every situation. It should not be done on the back
or abdomen of a woman who is pregnant, or on
anyone who has a skin allergy or an ulcerated
sore.
