2. Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is not well understood by the medical
community. It is known, though, that certain
people are more at risk of developing
fibromyalgia than others. The symptoms of
fibromyalgia can include everything from
widespread pain to fatigue; menstrual pain to
sleep disturbances. Because of the variety of
fibromyalgia symptoms, there are a number of
associated conditions linked to fibromyalgia.

3. Fibromyalgia is a disorder of unknown etiology
characterized by widespread pain, abnormal pain
processing, sleep disturbance, fatigue and often
psychological distress. People with fibromyalgia may also
have other symptoms; such as:
 Morning stiffness
 Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
 Headaches, including migraines
 Irritable bowel syndrome

 Painful menstrual periods and other pain syndromes

4. The prevalence of fibromyalgia is about
2%, affecting an estimated 5.0 million adults in
2005. Prevalence was much higher among
women than men (3.4% versus 0.5%). Taken

5. Diagnosis and Test
Currently there are no laboratory tests available for
diagnosing fibromyalgia. Doctors must rely on
patient histories, self-reported symptoms, a
physical examination and an accurate manual
tender point examination. This exam is based on
the standardized American College of
Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. Proper
implementation of the exam determines the
presence of multiple tender points at
characteristic locations.

6. To meet the fibromyalgia criteria for diagnosis, patients must
have:
A. Widespread pain in all four quadrants of the
body for a minimum of three months
B. At least 11 of the 18 specified tender points
The 18 sites used for the fibromyalgia diagnosis
cluster around the neck, shoulder, chest, hip,
knee, and elbow regions. The finger pressure that
your doctor must apply to these areas during an
exam is just enough to cause the nail bed to
blanch or become white.
