Fertilization involves the fusion of male and female gametes. For fertilization to occur, sperm undergo two changes after ejaculation: capacitation and the acrosome reaction. Capacitation is a conditioning process that occurs in the female reproductive tract over approximately 7 hours, removing proteins from the sperm membrane and allowing it to undergo the acrosome reaction upon contact with the egg's zona pellucida. The acrosome reaction then allows sperm to penetrate and fertilize the egg.
