  1. Love stories always involve a mighty quest, it’s rare that there are no obstacles to true love. So in the spirit of Sea’s story telling theme, the story of New Zealand’s largest domestic energy efficiency programme to date is told as a mighty quest for true love, which turned out not a simple story.
  2. Prime Minister’s Job Creation SummitProposal through Budget 2009.Large-scale insulation and heating retrofit programme.In 2008, the National Government was formed and started its movements towards economic growth and job creation. The Prime Minister’s Job Creation Summit was a turning point. Proposals for a large-scale insulation retrofit programme went through the Budget round in the next year. There were details to be worked through – how would we differentiate between segments of the market? Low income people face the greater financial barrier, but the financial, information and access barriers were strongly present in the GI sector.

Huge information and awareness campaigns were required The information needed to follow a path: we started with general information “insulation is good, you need it”.Then we moved to “you know you need insulation, but can’t afford it, well we’re here to help”.Then we had to focus on the results of the MOTU evaluations “you can’t afford not to do this for your family’s health and welbeing – and we’re here to help”.Market research was a key to the development of our information campaigns.WUNZ created, at its peak, 270,000+ households willing and aware of the need to insulate – but market research also showed that most people took up the offer from word of mouth. So neighbours telling neighbours about the benefits of insulation is, at the end of the day, the best way to inspire people to take action.
  5. THIRD PARTY FUNDERS AND FINANCESince 2007/08 ASB has funded 11,607 retrofits ASB contribution of $11,650,000 since July 2007 and  $9,000,000 since July 2009. Since 2009, 8,900 in Northland through Warm Up New Zealand: Heat SmartThat’s nearly 16% of all Northland Homes – an amazing achievement.
