The appointment of Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka as the head of UN Women, the global agency for women empowerment, has been hailed by the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry as another South African success in the sphere of gender equity and human rights. A former South African Deputy President – in fact, as such, the highest ranking woman in the history of our country - Ms Mlambo-Ngcuka, has joined Navi Pillay, the current High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, a director in the UN’s Bureau for Development Policy, in leading international positions.
