2 Samuel 13 From henceforward David was
followed with one trouble after another. Adultery
and murder were David's sins, the like sins among
his children were the beginnings of his punishment:
he was too indulgent to his children.
Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary
Ephesians 6 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your
children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture
and admonition of the Lord.
Don’t nag and fuss; don’t be harsh.
Use loving discipline to train children.

2 Samuel 13 1 And it came to
pass after this, that Absalom
the son of David had a fair
sister, whose name was
Tamar; and Amnon the son of
David loved her. 2 And Amnon
was so vexed, that he fell sick
for his sister Tamar; for she
was a virgin; and Amnon
thought it hard for him to do
anything to her.
Lovesick
Only lust
Obsessive
lust

Leviticus 20:17 (TLB) "If a man has sexual
intercourse with his sister, whether the daughter of
his father or of his mother, it is a shameful thing,
and they shall publicly be cut off from the people
of Israel. He shall bear his guilt.
Love doesn’t desire to drag the beloved into
sin.
Love wants only the best for the beloved.
Lust cares only for itself.

Tamar was Absalom’s full sister.
She was Amnon’s half sister.
But, to lust after her and take her was still sin.
2 Samuel 12 11 Thus saith the LORD (to David),
Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine
own house, and I will take thy wives before thine
eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall
lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
The beginning of his troubles!

3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was
Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother (first
cousins): and Jonadab was a very subtil (cunning)
man. 4 And he said unto him, Why art thou, being
the king's son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not
tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar,
my brother Absalom's sister.
Amnon didn’t mention that Tamar was his
sister; he called her Absalom’s sister.
But Jonadab knew.

5 And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy
bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father
cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let
my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress
the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at
her hand.
An evil plot
It begins with deception, and it grows.

8. 8
6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick
(pretended): and when the king was come to see
him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let
Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of
cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand. 7 Then
David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy
brother Amnon's house, and dress him meat.
David didn’t see what was going on with
Amnon; he closed his eyes.

2 Samuel 5:13 (KJV) And David took him more
concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he
was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons
and daughters born to David.
This was the custom of the day, but it was
forbidden by God.

Deuteronomy 17 15 Thou shalt in any wise set him
king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall
choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set
king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over
thee, which is not thy brother. 16 But he shall not
multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to
return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply
horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto
you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that
his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly
multiply to himself silver and gold.

David had taken many wives and concubines, and
each wife would have had her own house or her
own apartment in the palace.
Each wanted her son to be the next king.
Jealousy and intrigue would have been
everywhere.
God warned them not to do it, and
they did it anyway.

12. 12
Deuteronomy 17 18 And it shall be, when he sitteth
upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write
him a copy of this law in a book out of that which
is before the priests the Levites: 19 And it shall be
with him, and he shall read therein all the days of
his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his
God, to keep all the Words of this Law and these
Statutes, to do them:
He should not have been ignorant.
Each king was to make his own copy.

13. 13
8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and
he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded
it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the
cakes. 9 And she took a pan, and poured them out
before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said,
Have out all men from me. And they went out
every man from him.

14. 14
10 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into
the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And
Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and
brought them into the chamber to Amnon her
brother. 11 And when she had brought them unto
him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her,
Come lie with me, my sister.
Evil desires grow into evil plans which grow
into attempts to fullfil the desires.

15. 15
12 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not
force me; for no such thing ought to be done in
Israel: do not thou this folly. 13 And I, whither shall
I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt
be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I
pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not
withhold me from thee.
Tamar was willing to become his wife, but she
was not willing to just have sex with him.
But, remember, this kind of relationship was
strictly forbidden by the Law.

16. 16
13b Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king;
for he will not withhold me from thee.
David would have indulged his oldest son, even
though his desire was contrary to God’s Law.
Indulgent parents raise self-centered children.

17. 17
14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice:
but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay
with her. 15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so
that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater
than the love wherewith he had loved her. And
Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.
Amnon said he loved Tamar,
but it was not love – it was only vile lust.
He used her and cast her away.

18. 18
James 1 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I
am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted
with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every
man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own
lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived,
it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished,
bringeth forth death.
This Truth was fulfilled in Amnon.
