Westminster Abbey is a historic church in London that has served as the site for royal coronations. It contains the shrines of Edward the Confessor and Queen Elizabeth I, as well as the burial place of Geoffrey Chaucer and other famous British writers in Poet's Corner. The Abbey was originally founded as a monastery in the 10th century and has undergone periods of Catholic and Protestant rule over its history.

8. In the beginning… Saint Dunstan brought monks to Thorney Island around 960 AD About a century later, King Edward built a church for the monks and dedicated it to St. Peter. He died a few days after it was consecrated.
9. Coronations The first coronation held at Westminster Abbey was on Christmas Day 1066 for William the Conqueror. In 1301 the Coronation Chair was constructed. It has been used for every coronation since 1308.
11. A Time of Controversy In 1540, the monastery was broken up. In 1553, Catholicism was re-established in England However, in 1558 England reverted back to Anglicanism.
