3. CONGRATULATIONS!
You have been appointed to the Gaia
Foundation’s international research team.
The goal of the Gaia Foundation is to research
cultural and biological diversity across the
world in an effort to create awareness and
promote respectful relationships from culture
to culture and harmony with nature.
You are being given a commission of 80 days
and enough money to complete your task to
journey anywhere in the world.
4. OBJECTIVES
Your mission is to document places across the
globe in specific areas that we have studied
throughout the coursework of World Geography at
Creekside High School.
On your journey, you will investigate, research and
collect data in a “diary”, describing the details of
physical geography, human geography and issues
of the region that you would encounter in your
travels.
Upon completion of your journey, you will submit
your research to the foundation director, Mr. Carn,
in a presentation format.
5. OBJECTIVES
We at the Foundation look forward to working with
you on this project.
Please take a moment to peruse the instructions
on the following slides for a more detailed
explanation of your responsibilities.
Sincerely,
Mr. Carn
6. Please visit each one of the following places,
regions, countries or continents that were
covered in class:
TOPICS COVERED IN CLASS
8. You may visit specific areas within each
country, region or continent.
Please choose several if you want! (only
one is required)
Provide a reason as to why you would visit
these places as well as some facts about
the specific area.
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
9. Please explain
why you would
want to visit
certain places.
Is the region play an
important role?
Is it culturally
significant?
Explain!
See examples to the
right.
I would want to visit the Rocky
Mountains because I love the snow and
I always wanted to try snow boarding.
I would want to visit the Rocky
Mountains because I have never been
and I have never seen snow.
I would want to visit the Rocky
Mountains because they are beautiful
and I would to hike them.
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
10. The Rocky Mountains:
The largest mountain range in the
United States, the Rockies run 3,000
miles from Alaska to New Mexico
Relatively young: 80 million years old
Less erosion means rugged, 12,000-
foot, snow-covered peaks.
The Rocky Mountains are the most
significant physical geography and
attract millions of people a year to
snow ski, hike or bask in their majesty
UNITED STATES PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
Please describe the physical geography and tell
why it may be significant to the specific region.
-Fun Facts and “Did You Know ?” are always great
use.
13. Please provide an
element of Human
Geography that
you would like to
experience in each
location.
Why would you want to
experience this?
Why is this unique?
Explain!
See examples to the right.
I would want to visit Venice, Italy during
the annual Carnival celebration. It looks
like it would be an awesome party and
certainly an experience of a lifetime.
I would want to see a Russian ballet.
Ballets in Russia are the most
extraordinary plays and a must see!
I would want to hang out with the
Aborigines for the day and learn their
culture. I want to learn how to play the
didgeridoo. The Aborigines are
interesting people and a very unique
culture.
HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
14. • The Aborigines are the
Australian natives that
had been living there for
thousands of years
before the first
Europeans came to
Australia in the 1600’s.
• They arrived there
about 40,000 years ago
from southern Asia.
THE FIRST AUSTRALIANS
15. Provide an issue facing the region and
how you would help in the struggle,
conflict, or issue.
Provide the issue, why you chose it, how
you would help and also some facts
regarding the issue.
ISSUES IN ________
16. Please provide an
issue facing the
region in each
location.
Why would did you choose
to this issue?
How are you going to
help?
Explain!
See examples to the right.
I would want to help Africa’s HIV
problem. More people are affected by
HIV/AIDS in Africa and I would help
bring awareness to the disease to try
and help solve the problem.
I would want to help solve the issues of
Drug Trafficking from Latin America to
the United States. Drugs are one of the
greatest problems facing our country
and it needs to stop at the source. I
would assist the Drug Enforcement
Agency (DEA) by travelling as an
undercover agent in Mexico and
arresting cartel members.
HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
17. DRUG TRADE
Mexican and Columbian drug
cartels generate around $39
billion a year in revenue.
Mexican cartels are currently
considered the "greatest
organized crime threat" to the
United States.
Though many efforts have been
made to stop drug trafficking, its
seems the business is too
lucrative to ever eliminate it
completely.
18. There are 10 topics
covered throughout the
year.
Go back to these topics
and powerpoints to
review information.
Extended and
independent research
may have to be done to
complete each section.
Make presentation
clean, fun and
interesting by using fun
facts and pictures!
DO NOT copy and paste
from Mr. Carn’s
powerpoints. This will
result in a massive
reduction in your grade!
Powerpoints are provided
so you can generate ideas
and then complete your
own research.
When finished, please
upload your project to
eLearning or provide a link
your project.
You may also e-mail Mr.
Carn your final draft.
