Introductory talk on the usage of Linked Data for official statistics, given at the ESS (Linked) Open Data Workshop 2017, in Malta, January 2017. In this introductory talk we will discuss the main foundations for the application of Linked Data principles into official statistics. We will briefly introduce what Linked Data is, as well as the main principles, languages and technologies behind it (URIs, RDF, SPARQL). We will also discuss about the different formats in which data can be made available on the Web (e.g., RDF Turtle, JSON-LD, CSV on the Web). We will then move into providing a detailed presentation, with step by step examples based on existing Linked Statistical Data sources, of the W3C recommendation RDF DataCube, which is the basis for the dissemination of statistical data as Linked Data. Finally, we will provide some examples of applications, and the opportunities that this approach offers for the development of the proofs of concepts selected by Eurostat and to be discussed during the meeting.

The main goal of my research through 30 years is to understand software by empirical studies. While researchers traditionally use students as subjects to pilot studies before they are carried out in industrial environments, the supporting pillar of my working method is to set up studies with students that go beyond the contribution to scientific literature and identify benefits for other stakeholders. The four primary actors are: students, instructors, industry, and researchers Later, in our studies we have identified issues that appear at the intersection between art and software. Artistic software projects have often a social goal and are highly innovative. Our studies in art and software have given the ground for two research directions. The first is maker movement and its role in educational practices. Typical topics of interest vary from engineering -oriented pursuits such as electronics, robotics, 3D printing to the use of art and craft. Leveraging the beneficial outcomes from the Maker Movement approach and programming languages designed for children, together with a group of researchers, and artists we have designed, implemented and evaluated workshop programs. In our studies we have identified the important factors that characterize the design of the activities and the main aspects of children's engagement in such software intensive activities The second research direction is to harness the power of big data, increase collective and individual awareness about societal problems and ultimately create the needed intelligence that will lead entrepreneurs and policy makers to innovative solutions for societal challenges towards a sustainable society. The lecture can be run at different level of interaction with the audience by using interactive tools

Presented on May 10, 2016 by Luca Mari at the International conference “IoTnow Everything but hype” (Milan Disruptive week) in the session “Overview of IoT key issues, opportunities and threats”. Abstract: Differently from the industrial automation epitomised in the Computer Integrated Manufacturing of the ’70s and ’80s, IoT is a human-centric technology, in which the widespread adoption of open source and hardware tools lowers the barriers to entry and blurs the roles, toward scenarios of extreme customisation made by prosumers operating in informal, dynamic communities. With some reflections on this perspective, from the data and experiences obtained in an ongoing European research project on the “Digital Do It Yourself” phenomenon.
