National Museum Showcases Ancient Artifacts in Open Air
1. National Museum showcases ancient artifacts in open air
Facing a dearth of available space, Delhi’s National Museum has started outdoor displays of the thousands artifacts.
Visitors to Delhi’s largest museum are now able to amble through the plush grounds that surround the building while enjoying many
rare artifacts that have never been on display.
Humayun's Tomb is one of the three World Heritage Sites in Delhi protected by UNESCO.
2. The National Museum boasts over 200,000 individual pieces in its archives including sculptures, murals, and jewelry, and is
considered to be India’s largest and finest collection of ancient artifacts spanning the country’s culturally diverse history, though only a
fraction of the ancient artifacts are on display inside the museum.
“We display a meagre nine per cent of our total collection. Each gallery faces a space shortage,” a museum employee told the Indian
Express. “Many of our antiquities such as sculptures are placed outside, in the open, so that people may get a chance to at least see
their heritage.”
The Archeological Survey of India occupies about a third of the National Museum’s complex as office space. The ASI has plans to
move to a new building, and once the move is complete the National Museum plans to open a third wing to display more of the
artifacts that are housed in reserve.
“More than 95 percent of the objects in the museum are lying in reserve and have never been put on display,” India’s Comptroller
Auditor General said in 2013.
