- As you know, we play at the edge of the grid – high volume, low cost, scalable to millions of nodes. We are not GE, ABB, even Cisco making low volume, high priced products

- Now let’s talk about the difference between a control network and a communications network, and explain why making our grids smart is not as simple as building an “Internet” on top of the grid. Internet is about centralized data and decision-making. That is fast enough and reliable enough and survivable enough for email, facebook, even general ledger. Not fast enough for controlling electricity. To do that we need to get the decision rules out to the edge of the network, close to where the decisions need to be made. Only then do we maximize reliability and survivability, and minimize delays. Let me illustrate with an example of PHEVs in a neighborhood attached to a transformer…
