WHAT ARE PRODUCTION TASKS?

• A task given to students to create a form of
  “presentation” to showcase the knowledge
  they have gained…

• Form of learning whereby students create a
  product or concrete artifact that is the focus of their
  learning and shows what they learned

  o Can teachers have production tasks?
  o What do teachers produce that qualify?

PRODUCTION TASKS VERSUS OTHER TASKS

• What makes production tasks different from content
  exploration tasks?

• What are the students doing in production tasks that
  make them unique?

CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION TASKS

•    Example: Digital Story

     1.   Deals with authentic (real-world) issues
     2.   Planning, critical thinking, reasoning, and
          creativity  Multifaceted assessment
          (i.e., rubric)
     3.   Developed over time; Student choices
           Focus on individual progress (i.e., portfolio)
     4.   Teachers facilitate rather than control.
          Scaffolding/support from a variety of sources
     5.   Individual vs. group responsibility (comm. skills)

•    Production tasks are complex, but demonstrate complex
     knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes

  students use (hint: think about their abilities)?

• How difficult is the task?

• How can I structure the task?
   o High structure (teacher leads) vs Low structure (teacher
     supports while students do)
   o Individual or group tasks?
   o How much time can I (or students) spend on this task?


• What resources are available in the learning
  environment?
   o Does this limit the choices?

PRODUCTION TASKS INVOLVE
COMPLEX ACTIVITIES

• Learners are not just doing a task – they are:
   o Demonstrating knowledge in action
   o Learning the acceptable and best ways to do a task
   o If done in groups, they are learning group and classroom
     expectations for working with others
   o They are learning about presentation of content, not just
     the content itself

COMPLEX ACTIVITIES

• The assessment of a production task is the
  product, but is also the whole process leading up to
  the product
   o That’s why rubrics are often used with Production Tasks
   o That’s why we will be discussing assessment of production
     tasks later today!

  • 3. WHAT ARE PRODUCTION TASKS? • A task given to students to create a form of “presentation” to showcase the knowledge they have gained… • Form of learning whereby students create a product or concrete artifact that is the focus of their learning and shows what they learned EDUC W200 Week 7
  • 4. WHAT ARE PRODUCTION TASKS? • What about teachers? o Can teachers have production tasks? o What do teachers produce that qualify? EDUC W200 Week 7
  • 5. PRODUCTION TASKS VERSUS OTHER TASKS • What makes production tasks different from content exploration tasks? • What are the students doing in production tasks that make them unique? EDUC W200 Week 7
  • 6. CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION TASKS • Example: Digital Story 1. Deals with authentic (real-world) issues 2. Planning, critical thinking, reasoning, and creativity  Multifaceted assessment (i.e., rubric) 3. Developed over time; Student choices  Focus on individual progress (i.e., portfolio) 4. Teachers facilitate rather than control. Scaffolding/support from a variety of sources 5. Individual vs. group responsibility (comm. skills) • Production tasks are complex, but demonstrate complex knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes EDUC W200 Week 7

  • 8. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER FOR PRODUCTION TASKS? • Who is performing the task (Student? Teacher?) • Which type of production tasks/tools can my students use (hint: think about their abilities)? • How difficult is the task? EDUC W200 Week 7

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER FOR PRODUCTION TASKS? • How can I structure the task? o High structure (teacher leads) vs Low structure (teacher supports while students do) o Individual or group tasks? o How much time can I (or students) spend on this task? • What resources are available in the learning environment? o Does this limit the choices? PRODUCTION TASKS INVOLVE COMPLEX ACTIVITIES • Learners are not just doing a task – they are: o Demonstrating knowledge in action o Learning the acceptable and best ways to do a task o If done in groups, they are learning group and classroom expectations for working with others o They are learning about presentation of content, not just the content itself EDUC W200 Week 7

PRODUCTION TASKS INVOLVE COMPLEX ACTIVITIES • The assessment of a production task is the product, but is also the whole process leading up to the product o That’s why rubrics are often used with Production Tasks o That’s why we will be discussing assessment of production tasks later today!
