Scenario and Background
 If your children attended a school in which most
students scored below the state average on
 standardized tests…what would you do?

 What if they were enrolled in a school with few
certified teachers, overcrowded classrooms with not
enough books and other supplies…what would you do?
Table of Contents
 Dissatisfied parents are very proactive in getting
    change by using…
 Taking political actions
 Meeting with teachers and school administrative
 Attending board meetings
 Working on committees and being visible and active in
    the child’s school
Demographics
 Families with enough money have other options
 They can decide to send their children to expensive or
  nonsectarian private schools
 Their budget can absorb the costs of the decision even
as the parents continue paying taxes to support public
  schools
 The family will go to great measures even if it means
the child has to go far away to a private school.
Statement of the Problem
 It is no secret most poor families attend urban public
  under achieving school
 Their academic achievements lacks far behind than
their counterparts in suburban public schools
 Many of the children who reside in the inner city are
  members of ethnic or minorities.
 Often time minority groups (i.e., Black Alliance for
Educational Options) show concern by rallying and
bringing media attention to the lack of quality
  education for minority children
Planning Committee/Leadership Team
 Options should be encouraged by offering choice
  programs
 Government funds will continue to be used
 Offer more magnet schools that offer specialized
  curriculum across the district
 Offer open enrollment/voluntarily transfer programs
Initial Meeting and Future Meetings
 Offer families vouchers, providing more options
 The vouchers would include also provide additional
  subsidies
 This would also include schools for special needs
  children as well
 Parents would be afforded the ability to “shop around”
for the best school that meet their child’s need
Mission/Vision/Belief Statements
 Voucher programs would address concerns about
injustices in the American educational system
 With adequate funded programs, all parents,
regardless of income would be able to provide the
  child’s educational and interest needs
 Vouchers can also help address the long standing
problem of segregation in American schools.
Leadership Style and Theories
 Analysts state funding voucher programs would cause
  havoc on the economy
 Each parent or guardian would receive monetary
  benefits
 This open up the flood gates for voucher schemes
 It is estimated this would cost taxpayers over $22
  billion dollars per year.
Ethical, Financial and Legal Issues
 Analysts state funding voucher programs would cause
  havoc on the economy
 Each parent or guardian would receive monetary
  benefits
 This open up the flood gates for voucher schemes
 It is estimated this would cost taxpayers over $22
  billion dollars per year.

Goals
 Short range (3-6 months)
   - Increase marketing and outreach programs

 Intermediate range (1-2 years)
   - Improve working conditions and teacher support
by creating a positive environment

 Long range (2 + years)
-Restructure and increase teachers salaries by
offering an attractive competitive incentive package
