I would like to talk about a sector that is truly knowledge based. Farm animals don’t just happen, they are carefully selected in the first place, the young are bred and cared for, fed on balanced diets and vaccinated like babies to protect them from disease. We pay attention to their welfare and work in economically viable systems that provide employment and generate high-quality products.
INRA is the largest nationally-funded agricultural research institute in Europe and may soon be larger than the USDA research branch in the United States. However, what I am going to tell you today is not just the INRA view, it is a consensus view of several EU countries.
What is livestock production? It utilises a variety of supplies, or inputs

Livestock farming is at the heart of an EU industry which has an annual turnover of 152 billion Euro. It is at the centre of a food chain whose overall value is far greater.
This is the question for us this morning.
We have talked to the Technology Platforms that are closely associated with livestock farming.

This will formally start next week - 30th November is the formal inauguration of this initiative
