• The subject matter herein comprises the course material for a day’s
seminar offered to businessmen and professionals. It starts with an
analysis of the individual. Then explains the importance of self-
management before attempting any form of external management.
An essential aspect of self-management lies in developing and
maintaining objectivity in action. Objectivity is the sap that sustains
the vitality of action. Paves the way to your success and progress in
this world. The subject then turns to the secret of true success. A
key that opens the door to success. The final portion gives certain
practical aids to success.

• The first topic deals with self-management. Management of one’s own
personality. Self-management plays an important role in increasing
productivity in the realm of your activity. The second topic highlights
objectivity as the essence of productivity. When you maintain
objectivity in your actions you become efficient and productive. The
third explains how action is related to success. Your present action is
the cause that brings about success or failure as its effect in the future.
The last topic presents certain practical aids for achieving success.


I. MANAGEMENT VS SELF-MANAGEMENT.
• A person’s productivity involves not only management of material and
men but the management of his own self as well. One may have
adequate education and technical qualification to manage one’s
business or profession, yet the output of work suffers because of one’s
disturbed state of mind. A common problem which harasses people in
the corporate world.


I. MANAGEMENT VS SELF-MANAGEMENT…
• Businessmen and professionals carry their domestic problems to their
offices and their offices problems to their homes. They do not know
how to switch off their domestic concerns while at office. Nor their
officials concerns while at home. Their minds are never at rest. This
impairs their concentration, efficiency and productivity in their field of
activity. Hence self-management is a crucial preliminary to any other
form of management in life.


Constituents of Management
• Management comprises three basic factors.
• Manager … Individual … Subject
• Managed … Material and Men … Object
• Managing…Function …Relationship between subject and object.
• The corporations provide their managers adequate material and human
resources for executing the work entrusted to them. The second factor
of management is well taken care of. They also make sure they appoint
a manager with appropriate academic and technical knowledge to
execute his work. They are convinced that his qualification is adequate
for him to function at optimum capacity.


Constituents of Management ….
• Thus the third factor of management is provided for as well.
Corporate bodies understand and operate only in these two realms.
They do not attend to the first factor at all. They do not relate to the
manager as an individual. His inner being. His mental stability. How
much of the manager’s mind and intellect is available for him to fulfill
his managerial obligation. These factors are not known in
management circles. Much less analyzed. And least attended to.


• A manager is basically an individual. Work

• But then, what happens to the manifold roles while an individual plays
the role of a manager? How does he deal with them? Does he leave
them behind? Bring them along with him into his present role? If he
does, he will remember his other roles while performing the present
one. Then, would not the memory of his other roles interfere with his
concentration in the present role? His attention must focus on the
present to render his work productive. He cannot afford to dissipate his
concentration on other thoughts. But then, can he afford to drop the
memory of all other roles, associations and relations? Forget
completely that he is a citizen of his country or father of his family while
acting as a manager in his company? If he does so, will he not impinge
upon his other obligations? Either way, he would face a problem.


• The solution to this problem lies in being aware of the other roles
without allowing them to intrude into the present. Keep them in a
background. But let not their memory interfere in any way with the
present action. That will help him to maintain objectivity. Increase
efficiency in action.
• The first component of management, the individual, therefore needs
to be well accomplished to optimize productivity in his field of action.


The Individual
• Self-management relates to an individual’s inner self. The inner self is
constituted of the mind and intellect. The mind comprises impulses,
feelings, and emotions. The intellect is constituted of reason,
reflection, and judgment. The mind and intellect propel actions of
the body. The body by itself cannot act. Actions emanate either from
the mind or from the intellect or from a combination of both mind
and intellect.

The Individual….
• The mind functions on likes and dislikes. It produces endless desires.
It lacks direction or dimension. It can cause you great damage if your
intellect does not govern it. Like the case of an alcoholic. His mind is
obsessed with drinking. His intellect is not powerful enough to control
the tremendous pressure of the mind.

The Individual….
• In the world today, everyone’s mind is pressurized by a host of desires
and expectations from all walks of life – domestic, official, social. The
intellect battles with the mind moment to moment but invariably loses
control over it. Consequently the mind remains ever agitated,
disturbed, troubled. If a manager has such a disturbed mind he cannot
perform his managerial functions normally. His work suffers. His
productivity falls. To increase productivity, therefore, the intellect
needs to be developed and strengthened. A powerful intellect makes
a productive manager.


The Individual….
• A powerful intellect, however, does not mean mere intelligence. A
person may be very intelligent and yet have a poor intellect.
Intelligence arises from being well informed on one or more subjects.
You may be highly educated in geometry or psychiatry. You become
intelligent in the subject. You turn out to be a great geometrician or
psychiatrist. That’s about all. Your intellect may still lack control over
the demands of your mind. A brilliant scientist may easily yield to his
materialistic or sensual desires. To gain proper control over the whims
and fancies of the mind you need a strong intellect.


The Individual….
• Modern education aims only at developing the human intelligence.
Teachers communicate their knowledge, transfer thoughts and ideas
to students from an external source. This method can improve a
student’s intelligence. Not his intellect.
• You cannot strengthen your intellect by merely acquiring other’s
knowledge, however wise they are. You develop your intellect
through original thinking, independent reflection. That does not mean
you discard the wisdom of the past. Your approach to life must be
methodic, scientific. To begin with, acquire the knowledge laid down
by earlier thinkers. Having acquired the prevailing wisdom, think
originally on your part. Use your own power of reasoning. Research
further, your way of life must be paved through individual exertion and
understanding. Not on mere acceptance of past authorities.

The Individual….
• Thus by a continuous process of study, original thinking and
independent reflection on various aspects of life you develop a
powerful intellect. Such an intellect alone can control the wild nature
of the mind.


Impulsive VS. Discriminative Action
• The difference between an impulsive and discriminative action lies in
the use of the intellect. In every action your reason must guide your
impulses. Your intellect should direct the mind. Then, that action
would be discriminative. If, however, the mind itself propels an action
without intellectual direction then it would be impulsive.
• Impulsive actions can harm both you and society. An action impelled
by impulses is bereft of reason. And acting without reason is like
driving a car without a steering wheel. The consequences of such
actions could be disastrous. Whereas, actions directed by the intellect
are beneficial to one and all. Logic and reason support them. And as
the intellect grows, you become more mature. You rise to greater
heights of perfection.


Impulsive VS. Discriminative Action…
• A manager who acts impulsively lacks clarity in thinking. He cannot
make quick and proper decisions. His work output suffers. His
productivity drops. If his impulses still go unchecked he will
deteriorate further. His intellect loses control over them gradually. He
becomes less and less objective and more and more impulsive in his
behavior. Turns more emotional. If he continues thus, his
emotionalism will develop into eccentricity. Eccentricity into hysteria.
Finally, hysteria leads to virtual insanity. The minds of executives
managing large corporations have deteriorated alarmingly. Yet
management gurus and their associations are not even aware of this
serious deficiency in self-management. They do not deal with it at all.
Ironically they themselves are victims of this grave problem.


Impulsive VS. Discriminative Action…
• Management of any field, therefore, requires attention to the inner
personality primarily. Self-management on the part of the manager.
A manager must develop a powerful intellect to govern the impulses
of his mind. He will then gain objectivity. Increase productivity in his
field of action.


Objectivity In Action
• Objectivity is the backbone of productivity. The more objective you
are the more productive you become. Objectivity is measured by
your intellect’s control and governance of your mind. The mind yields
to the pressures of sensual attractions, emotional attachments,
insatiable desires. A well developed intellect alone can control the
weaknesses of the mind and direct it to one’s optimum output in life.
• The intelligence gained through academic education and practical
training qualifies you to work in a particular field of action. But
impulses and desires may build up in your mind to cause severe mental
agitations. Your intellect then fails to control the mind’s demands.
You lose your intellectual alertness in actions. The pressures of the
mind destroy your objectivity. Consequently, efficiency and
productivity start decreasing in your field of action.

Develop Objectivity
• You lose your objectivity because of your likes and dislikes. Your
powerful attractions and repulsions. You court objects and beings
that bring you instant pleasure. You discard those that cause your
displeasure. You act mostly by your pleasures. Your actions are led
more by your feelings and emotions rather than reason and judgment.
The intellect hardly plays its part. Such actions are unproductive,
even detrimental.


Develop Objectivity…
• Therefore, as long as you are possessed by likes and dislikes, your
actions will suffer. You must ward off the negative influence of
impulses and feelings upon your actions. You can achieve this by
fixing an ideal in your life. Your ideal will determine your aim,
ambition, aspiration in this world; your purpose, goal, mission in life.
Your intellect fixes the ideal. Your actions then follow the direction set
by the intellect rather than the whims and fancies of the mind.


• An ideal envisages something beyond your selfish, egocentric interests
in life. But life generally centers around you and your immediate
family. The family, the home, becomes the boundary of your interest
in life. All your actions in this world are directed towards the welfare
of the family and you. You are disinclined to doing anything beyond
this limit. It becomes the boundary of your activities. You operate
within that periphery.


• To fix an ideal in life you must look beyond that
self-cent red boundary. Try to conceive a goal
beyond the precinct of your narrow mind. Your
intellect must aim for something higher than the
mind’s petty attachments and desires. But take
care that you fix a realistic goal. In your
enthusiasm you may choose something far
beyond your capacity. You may however select as
high a goal as you can reach. The higher the goal,
the greater your potency in action. Let your
actions follow the direction set by your ideal.
Such work steps up your efficiency and
productivity. You progress in your field of activity.

Incentive VS Initiative
• In modern business administration the accepted jargon for
productivity is incentive for action. Management peers advise
corporate bodies to use incentives for workers to increase their
production. They try to incite workers to action from external sources.
Through inflated payments and perks, praises and promotions.
Incentives are mere boosters, not builders of action. They do not
promote the natural growth of action. They act as chemical fertilizers
in agriculture. Fertilizers merely boost the yield. But destroy the food
value, even the taste. So do incentives divest actions of their essence
and value. Actions lose their real potency and growth. Management
counselors do not realise this.


Incentive VS Initiative …
• The actual growth in production arises when workers develop the
initiative to work. When they take action on their own. The zeal to
work, to serve, comes from within oneself. An attitude which springs
from a high ideal. From a goal, purpose, cause, that transcends their
self-centred interests. But when they work for incentives they develop
a motive for personal reward. Work becomes self-centred. Though
incentives boost initial work output they have a diminishing value.
They may produce immediate benefits. But the quality and volume of
work gradually reduces to naught. Whereas, work backed by an
initiative for a higher cause produces a long term benefit. It steadily
increases to optimum productivity. Above all such work generates
peace and harmony among the workforce, in the work-place.


Incentive VS Initiative …
• Ironically, work pampered by incentives causes avarice for more and
more rewards in the minds of workers. It leads to discontentment and
disharmony in the end. Workers, therefore must be educated on the
fundamental values of life, encouraged to set high ideals at work.
Thus develop an initiative to serve and help the community rather
than exploit and aggrandise.


Consistency of Purpose
• Lack of consistency in a field of activity is another reason for drop in
productivity. Consistency of purpose is most essential to success and
progress. Fixing an ideal in your life sets a direction to your actions.
With a firm ideal before you, set your priorities in order. Let your
intellect direct your actions toward the determined goal. Thus your
actions, following one direction, develop great power and dynamism.
Anything focussed in one direction gathers power. For instance, water
flowing in one direction develops hydroelectric power. Wind blowing
in one direction gains power. So too light focussed to a point. Hence,
consistency in your efforts plays a vital role in increasing your
productivity in action.


The Secret of Success
• The whole world longs for success.
People crave for something which
belongs to the future. Little do they
realize that success is the effect of a
cause. That success or failure is a
result which is yet to come. And
action is the cause which brings
about that result. People are more
concerned about the effect than the
cause. Hardly anyone concentrates
on one’s action. The interest and
attention is on the result of action
rather than the present action.

The Secret of Success …
• Consequently, the action suffers. Success eludes such result-oriented
actions. Whereas, those who concentrate on their present action,
unmindful of its result, execute their actions perfectly. Success is
bound to follow such actions. Success, therefore, can be defined as
action itself at a future period of time. Today’s action
metamorphoses into tomorrow’s success or failure. Just as a child
becomes a youth later, and an old man toward the end of his life, so
too, the actual structure of one’s present action determines its result
in the future.


• THE SECRET OF SUCCESS …
• The world is made up of numerous fields of
actions. In each of these there exists a cause
and effect relationship. The cause and effect
relationship was engrained in this world from
the very beginning. A coconut seed always
produces a coconut tree and a coconut tree
produces a coconut seed. An egg has been
the cause of the hen and a hen the cause of
the egg. Man has been the son of his father
and father of his son. The phenomenon of
this world is just a play of cause and effect.


• The Law of Karma explains the phenomenon
of life based on the principle of cause and
effect relationship. The law states that you
are a product of the past and producer of
the future. You are what you are because of
your past efforts. Your past efforts
determine your present state and your
present effort will shape your future. Your
future, therefore, is a continuity of the past
modified in the present. Effort is the
underlying factor governing your life. If your
efforts are worthy you become a successful
person. If not they end in failure.

• This law is infallible. Yet people attribute success or failure to God.
God has nothing to do with your success or failure in life. God is only
the substratum of all activities. God relates to persons as petrol to
cars. Petrol provides the energy for movement in cars. But it does not
determine the nature of the movement. Heedless driving results in an
accident. Cautious driving ensures your safety. But the petrol used in
both the cars is the same. Petrol has nothing to do with the accident
or safety. And yet, without petrol no car ever moves. So does God
remain above your activities and their fruits? There is no sense in
linking God to your success or failure. He is the Life-spark which
energises you to act in whatever way you choose. The quality of your
action alone determines your success and progress in life. You get
what you deserve, not what you desire.

• Confusion arises in the minds of people regarding the Law of Karma.
They do not perceive the cause and effect relation function because
they do not have the complete facts. They come to an erroneous
conclusion when they fail to relate the entire cause to a particular
effect. Consequently, they fall a prey to superstitious beliefs in fate
and destiny. A simple example illustrates this truth.


• Two students appear for an examination. One of them works very
hard during the last two months of study leave. The other relaxes
during the same period. The first one, with all the efforts he puts in
fails. The second fares brilliantly. People normally attribute this
antithesis of their fate. The actual fact remains that the first student
wasted practically all the three years of the course and tried to make
up in the last two months. Whereas, the successful one as a
thoroughly disciplined student who applied himself devotedly to study
all through the course. Thus, when you apply the whole cause, you
find that the principle of cause and effect, the Law of Karma, works out
immaculately.


Ideal Action
• An ideal action has two essential requisites. The action itself must
generate energy. And it must avoid dissipation of the existing energy.
This is the technique of right action, which increases its productivity.
The first part of the technique which promotes energy comprises three
disciplines pertaining to the body, mind and intellect:
• Engaging the body in constant action.
• Surrendering the mind to a chosen ideal.
• Keeping the intellect focussed on the ideal.


Ideal Action …
• The body needs to act ceaselessly. Action builds up energy and
strength. Inaction weakens and ultimately destroys the physical body.
The second discipline aims at surrendering your mind to a higher ideal.
An ideal represents a nobler, greater purpose in your actions beyond
your selfish interests. When you surrender to a high ideal you gain
mental stamina to work. The higher the ideal the greater the stamina.
Your actions then gain immense energy. The third discipline relates to
the intellect. Your intellect is in constant focus upon the ideal. You
maintain objectivity in action. Thus the three disciplines help in
promoting energy in action.


Ideal Action …
• The second part of the technique helps you to concentrate on your present
action by avoiding dissipation of energy. Your existing energy dissipates through
three possible channels:
• Your worries of the past
• Your anxieties for the future
• Your feverish excitement over the present.


Ideal Action …
• Most people linger in the memories of the past. They let their past
failures and woes infiltrate into the present and disturb their action.
• The second, a common cause of dissipation, lies in the craving for the
enjoyment of the fruit of action. The anxiety for the future result while
acting in the present. The obsession for acquisition and enjoyment of
the fruit mars the proper execution of your present action.


Increase Productivity
Ideal Action …
• The third channel of dissipation is excitement over the present action
itself. Working oneself into a frenzy over one’s duty and responsibility.
Into a fever of doing. You must, therefore, learn to clip the worries of
the past and anxieties for the future and plunge into your present
activity without the least excitement. That will determine your
concentration in action. Through the practice of concentration and
consistency your actions will command productivity in any field of
application.

Ideal Action …

• The range of human activity also falls broadly under three categories
depending upon the manner in which the actions are performed:
• Actions performed with selfish motives, with egocentric
desires.
• Actions with unselfish motives or desires
• Actions without motives or desires.


Ideal Action …
• Selfish interests and motives propelled actions in the first category. An
individual merely fulfils his egocentric desires. He looks for mere
personal profit or benefit in his actions. He sweats and toils for
himself, perhaps his family, for procuring more comforts and
pleasures. His interest in life does not extend beyond his personal
acquisition and enjoyment.


Ideal Action …
• The second category visualizes a higher and nobler ideal in life. An
ideal which serves a common cause benefiting the society. A person
with an ideal no longer confines his actions to mere personal pleasure
or profit. The cause for which he works embraces the welfare of the
people at large. He strives all his life towards his noble ideal.


Ideal Action …
• The highest human activity falls under the third classification. Actions
which are free from desires and motives. Merely doing what ought to
be done. No desire propelling action. No obsession for fruit. Work
undertaken with a perfect sense of detachment. In a spirit of
renunciation.


Ideal Action …
• Renunciation in action is not renunciation of action. It only means
getting rid of your selfish ego, banishing all egocentric motives while
acting. Working for work’s sake. Your motto in life should be to strive,
to struggle, not to succeed. You will then maintain perfect poise and
harmony within while you work. The law of life is that your mind
should be at rest, peaceful and poised, while your body is constantly
engaged in action. Intense work is rest. Your life is enriched by the
spirit of selfless action. This is true success.


Ideal Action …
• Take a close look at the general pattern of nature. Learn your lessons
from the sun, moon and stars. They work so tirelessly. So
impersonally. Watch, the rivers flow, the earth yields vegetation,
cows provide milk, the flowers give fragrance. They have no personal
motive, no ego, no selfish desires to fulfill.


Ideal Action …
• Similarly, let your work be free from the taint of egoism and
selfishness. Follow the benevolence of nature. Rise above the idea of
the little self, your corroding ego. Banish the thought of I am the
doer. The higher you rise above your ego the more glorious will your
work turn out. Such work will bring you success, prosperity and
peace. If, however, you succumb to your selfish ego, your work will
suffer. You will cease to be peaceful and prosperous. That is the law.


Ideal Action …
• People are of the mistaken impression that work suffers when there is
no desire or motive attached to it. They fear that activity would cease
if they lose their desires. But this is far from the truth.
Consider the example of a child. A child is one of most active beings on
earth. Always effervescing with energy. Bubbling with activity. But
the child has no motives or desires, no plans or schemes, no hopes or
expectations. Similarly, in your life there need be no craving for
success any expectation of fruit. Craving and expecting only impair
and impede your activities. Instead, let your intellect set an ideal
before you. Then, plunge into action. Do not brood over the dead
past or worry about the unborn future but merely act in the living
present. Then alone will your work turn beautiful, fruitful, and
successful.

Ideal Action …
• Hardly anyone recognizes this law of life. People are steeped in
ignorance. You ought not to fall in line with the ignoramuses. Stand by
this sterling law of life. You will gain productivity, prosperity and peace
in all your endeavors.


Aids to Success
• This topic gives helpful directions on your way to success. Certain
practical aids while implementing the guidelines laid down in the
earlier topics. They prove useful in promoting your efficiency and
productivity in the world.
• One of the fundamental issues governing success in your endeavors in
the choice of the sphere of activity in your life. You must choose a
field of activity according to your basic nature. The nature of every
individual is constituted of his inherent tendencies and inclinations, his
distinct likes and dislikes, his particular choices and preferences.


Aids to Success …
• These manifest from your very birth. From an early age you show
distinct inclinations towards engineering or medicine, history or
philosophy, painting or music. When you grow into an adult you must
necessarily choose a vocation in life according to your own nature.
That becomes your duty and responsibility. By choosing the right

• It is important that you do not choose a vocation alien to your basic
nature. If you do, you will then become mentally agitated. Your

their children into a field of activity opposed to the child’s nature and
temperament. A typical example is a surgeon forcing his son into the
medical profession just because he has built a nursing home and a
lucrative practice. Others absorb their offspring into their business
ignoring their natural tendencies and talents. Though these
arrangements may be very convenient, they will become detrimental
in the long run. Sometimes even turn disastrous.

• Your fundamental duty therefore is to determine your basic nature.
Your innate traits and tendencies. Your attractions and repulsions.
Having found it choose a particular field of activity to suit your own
nature. You will then flourish in that field. Your productivity and
progress is assured.
• Having chosen the field of activity according to your basic nature,
your intellect, not your mind, must guide your actions in that field.
You must perform every action thereafter through reason and not by
mere impulse. Such discriminative actions performed in a compatible
field will optimize your productivity.


Aids to Success …
• Further, to ensure success and progress
all through your life, you must keep
raising your ideal gradually. To begin
with, fix a realistic ideal which you can
reach with a certain amount of strain and
struggle. Pursue the ideal diligently. You
will then find the pursuit comfortable. At
that stage you may raise your goal a little
to feel a similar strain. Struggle with the
renewed goal until you feel comfortable
again. Repeat this process by stepping up
your ideal each time. Your activities will
ultimately gain perfection.

Co-operative Endeavour
• Another positive aid to success lies in developing a spirit of co-
operative endeavor. To feel a sense of belonging to the whole in any
field of activity. To drop your self-centred attitude. To consider
yourself just a spoke in the wheel. No I am the doer arrogance. No
ego.


Co-operative Endeavour …
For example, the designer of the latest model in the automobile
industry must not arrogate all the work in his sleek model to himself.
He must realize that millions of thinkers, technocrats and technicians
have contributed their share towards his modern car. He must
dissolve the self-arrogating ego and function as a member of a team.
He will then increase his efficiency and productivity in the unit in
which he functions.


Complexes
• Most people suffer from complexes. They have either superiority or
an inferiority complex. Rare indeed is one who is free from them both.
Complexes create mental agitations. They tell upon the productivity
of your action. In business, a manager feels himself superior to his
employees and an employee feels inferior to him. Sometimes, vice
versa. At home, the wife feels herself superior to her husband and the
husband inferior to her. Or vice versa. Thus people are inflicted with
this disease of complexes everywhere.


Complexes …
• Complexes infest this world when there is lack of knowledge. When
people fail to see the beauty and grandeur of the cosmos with its
multi-faceted glories. Every object and being has its place in this
universe. None is superior or inferior. Nature is designed beautifully
and meticulously to cater to all aspects of life. Nothing is left out.
Earth produces vegetation. Vegetation sustains beings. The sun,
moon and stars, the flora and fauna, the mountains and rivers all play
their part to perfection to form a harmonious whole. In this
magnificent creation no object or being can assume a superior or
inferior position, with this understanding play your role in life to the
best of your ability. You will then be far more productive in whatever
you do.


Practice Objectivity
• In this world you constantly go through joy and sorrow. In business
you experience profit and loss. These fluctuations go on endlessly.
They are a part and parcel of life. People tend to identify with them,
get involved in them and suffer the pangs of these fluctuations. To get
over this unnecessary suffering you must learn to become objective.
Learn to view life totally, not egocentrically.

your complaint. Everything turns into a drop in the ocean of events
not only at the present moment but in all periods of life.

Practice Objectivity …
• Examine this axiom. A student fails in his examination. He feels
extreme sorrow at that time. The same person looks at this failure as a
mere incident in the latter part of his life. If, however, he learns the
art of looking at the failure, even at that time, as only one little
incident in his total life he becomes objective. The failure will not
upset his mental equilibrium. Furthermore, look at his failure against
the background of infinite failures of people at over the world. With
that broad view his sorrow will not stand out any more. It becomes
insignificant. Similarly, a businessman must look at his profit or loss
against the backdrop of his life’s experiences and also against the total
profit or loss experienced by the entire business world. Instantly, his
personal sorrow loses its sting.
