Welcome to the training module on the LZ1 family series from LedEngin, Inc. This module will overview LZ1-1xxx0x series of 3Watt and 5Watt LEDs from LedEngin Inc, also highlight key features and typical applications.
LedEngin have a variety in products for power LED ratings starting from 3Watt, 5Watt, 10Watt and 15 Watt. The color varieties are Red, Green, Blue, Amber, Dental blue and white. Multi color options exists also with 10W and 15W packages with wavelength options such as RGB, RGBA or Dental blue & UV. The package contains a high quality materials to optimize light output and minimizes stress which results in high reliability and lumen maintenance. The robustness is such that can be used in outdoor applications with high ambient temperatures and humidity.
The LZ1 family LED emitters provide 3W or 5W power in an extremely small package. With a 4.4mm x 4.4mm x 3.1mm ultra-small footprint, this package provides exceptional luminous flux per area, up to 3 times greater than competitors’ equivalent 3W products. The patent-pending design has unparalleled thermal and optical performance. These LEDs are suitable for indoor and outdoor architectural lighting, stage and entertainment lighting, backlighting, traffic and signal lights, full color displays, projectors, emergency lighting, medical and automotive lighting.
LedEngin has developed unique Ultra-High-Brightness (UHB) LED emitters and solid-state light source modules based on the company's patented state-of-the-art LED packaging technology. This technology employs thermal management, stress management, optical design, materials compatibility, and automated manufacturing processes to provide ultra-small, ultra-bright, and ultra-cool LED emitters that are especially suited for applications requiring maximum light output in limited system space.
The LZ series part number designation is defined as shown. It consists of base part number and bin code. The bin code represents any of the flux, dominant wavelength, or forward voltage bins specified in the binning tables in the specific data sheet. Ordering products with special bin selections, please refer to the data sheet or call our technical hotline.
The LZ1-1xxx0x Standard MCPCB option provides a convenient method to mount LedEngin’s 3W or 5W emitters. The six recessed features allow the use of M3 or #4 screws to attach the MCPCB to a heat sink. The MCPCB has three sets of “+” (Anode) and “-” (Cathode) solder pads for electrical connections. The MCPCB also contains a Zener diode for enhanced ESD protection.
The LZ1 Miniature MCPCB option provides a convenient method to mount LedEngin’s 3W or 5W emitters in many portable applications including dental wands. The MCPCB contains a Zener diode for enhanced ESD protection.
Here provides the information of absolute maximum ratings for 5W LED where Forward current is 1500mA and Peak pulsed forward current is 2000mA.
Here provides the information of absolute maximum ratings for 3W LED where Forward current is 1000mA and Peak pulsed forward current is 1500mA.
Here is the package outline drawing for the Led emitter providing information of Pin out from the internal structure. Which is just 4.4mm x 4.4mm x 3.1mm ultra-small footprint, this package provides exceptional luminous flux per area.
The thermal management design of an LED application is very important to ensure its reliability and optimum performance. The maximum junction temperature of the die inside the package is based on the allowable thermal stress of the package material which can not be exceeded to avoid a catastrophic failure of the device. The thermal resistance is the most important parameter that determines the amount of heat dissipates or travels out of the component. The lower the thermal resistance, the higher ambient temperature that the component can operate. The thermal interface materials are designed to minimize the thermal resistance between the LED components and their associated heat sink.
The basic concept of thermal management shows the importance of selecting the right materials from the substrate material, thermal interface to the heat sink or other cooling methods to ensure the device operating reliably within the expected ambient temperature range. Since the thermal resistance of the LED, Substrate material, and thermal interface between MCPCB and the heatsink are determined by the LED manufacturer, select the proper heatsink with proper thermal resistance is more important for high power LED application.
The LZ1 LED products are extremely energy efficient with a low forward voltage for a given driving current. However, when switching power supplies are used to drive LZ1 LED series, care should be taken since the switching power supplies are first turned on, they can produce high initial inrush current with a fast rise time. The peak inrush current can be several orders of magnitude greater than the circuit’s steady state current. This power surge can seriously damage the LEDs in operation. Further, the output voltage rating of the LED driver needs to be taken under consideration to avoid damage to LEDs as well. To insure proper operation of the LZ1 series LED, the notes listed here should be taken when a switching power supply is used to power the LED(s) on.
