Elemental Architecture is collaborating with local architects for the Museo d’Arte Provincia di Nuoro (MAN) on Sardinia. The museum is immediately adjacent to the Piazza Satta, created by the sculptor Costantino Nivola in collaboration with architect Richard G. Stein. Nivola, from the town of Orani about fifteen kilometers from Nuoro, designed the piazza to honor Sabastiano Satta (1867-1914), a leading poet of Sardinia. The opportunity to work on this project came when Elemental principal Carl Stein was invited to spend two weeks as Visiting Professor at the Universita Degli Studi di Sassari, coincidentally Satta’s alma mater. While there, because of our experience with contextual Modernism and our many connections with Nivola, not the least being that Richard Stein was a co-founder of The Stein Partnership, our predecessor firm, Stein was invited to meet with Lorenzo Marratzu, lead architect and Maurizio Bosa, design architect, for the MAN project. What followed was an intense charrette at the museum, followed by a series of exchanges of sketches, comments and observations, also involving Francesco Morisano and Redento Farris who were responsible for verifying field conditions and preparing many of the drawings. The resulting design has been approved by the Regional Council and local approval is expected shortly. The collaboration among Marratzu, Bosa and Stein is continuing with the preparation of final construction documents.
