Looking back at your
preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to
the full product?
Evaluation Question 7
One of the first tasks we did for our media project was a
Preliminary Task. This was a short clip to help us understand
the equipment we would be using though out the course,
experiment with different camera angels/ shots and gain
simple editing skills.
Our Preliminary Task had to based on a conversation between
two people in order to try camera angels/ shots such as;
Close-ups, Tracking Shot, High Angle, Low Angle & Hand
Held Zoom.
Our short scene was based on two friends, one making a
confession and the other reacting in a shocked manner. Now
looking back at our Preliminary Task at the end of the project
we see how basic our skills were and how much they have
developed in order to create out final Opening Sequence.
Camera Shots and AngelsCamera Shots and Angels
From watching our Preliminary Task back we
can see that our tracking shots and hand held
zoom were very shaking and unprofessional.
We practiced the hand held zoom many times
as we wanted to include in into our final
Opening Sequence and we feel that it looks
much more effective and builds tension for
the ending of our Opening Sequence.

Editing skillsEditing skills
We edited our Preliminary Task on iMovie which is quite a
basic software and has little effects that could be use in
our final Opening Sequence.
Also there is little continuity as the different clips don’t flow
and are very jumpy.
We edited our final Opening Sequence on Final Cut Pro
which is a much more advanced software than iMovie as
there are many different effects that can be used.
To make our Opening Sequence have more continuity we
used different effects like ‘Cross Dissolve’ and ‘Flashback’
in between each shot, this also help the story to flow and
unfold more effectively.

Mise en Scene and Lighting
We were very limited in many different aspects of the filming of our
Preliminary Task. Firstly, we had to film in lesson time, this
meant we had little choice of location and little time which
wouldn’t help to bring the story across.
Also the only equipment we had was a camera, meaning that we
couldn’t experiment with different lighting or multiples angles of
one shot.
When filming our final Opening Sequence we dedicated a whole day
to it and had different locations to film in.
Seeing as we had plenty of time to plan for the day of our final
filming we could think a lot about the Mise en Scene and light.
We brought many props and costume (crime scene tap, forensic
suite, alcohol bottles, magnifying glass). Also we used disco light
for party scene to help portray the party atmosphere.
