2. Sydney’s Outfit
I made my main character Sydney (Alice
Turner) wear pink patched pajamas. I
wanted Sydney to wear pajamas as the
scene is shot early in the morning when
Sydney has woken up on the morning of
her birthday. The
pajamas clearly indicate
to the audience that it is in
the morning. I wanted the pajamas to
be pink as pink is a stereotypical
girly color and from my research, all
the lead females in teen
comedy's favorite the color pink.
This color would emphasize the
stereotypes and keep to the
conventions.
3. Mothers Outfit
I wanted the mother in the sequence to
wear a grey jumper as it would
symbolize the older age, as grey is
often associated with been a old color.
The grey jumper would also create a
contrast between the otherwise bright
pajamas of the daughter. It would also
crate a contrast as the mother and
father are wearing day time clothes and
the daughter is still wearing her
pajamas. This also exaggerates the
stereotype that teenagers sleep for
longer that adults and young children
as they are expected to be lazy. The
fact that the parents and younger
brother are already up, dressed and
ready depicts the laziness in teenagers.
4. Father’s outfit
I decided that I wanted the father
figure to wear a hat and glasses as
it makes him look different to all
the other characters and creates
an original look. Another thing
that prompt me to do this was
through my research and
planning, I found that in most teen
comedy's the father usually wears
either a hat or glasses to make
him seem geeky in comparison to
the good looking male lead that
commonly dates the popular girl.
5. Sydney’s bed
I decided to
make Sydney's bed
sheets white as
white symbolizes inno
cence. It is also
the color that represe
nts youth, this will
hopefully help
indicate to
the audience Sydney’s
age and tenderness.
6. Posters
I wanted to add various
posters across the room to
give the audience an idea
of what Sydney (or a
stereotypical teenage girl)
is interested in. I put up
poster of pop idols such as
Ariana Grande, boy bands
like Big Time Rush and
female actors like Olivia
Holt to suggest to the
audience what kind of girl
Sydney is and what she is
into.
7. Dressing Table
I made the decision to include a
dressing table into the room
and put it in a shot to
exaggerate the stereotypical
love that teenage girls have
for hair and make up and the
obsession with looking
perfect. This again adds to
the conventions and
stereotypes that are
essential to use in a teen
comedy. I put various
perfumes and makeup
brushes on the table to make
it look as if Sydney uses it a
lot.
8. School Subjects
By putting a school revision book into the
scene also gives the audience an insight of
what Sydney likes and what interests her
besides celebrities and pop culture. It
shows the audience that she study's this
subject and perhaps has a love for it and a
future career in this path. This school
revision book will also communicate to the
audience the age of Sydney as it clearly
says 'A level' on the front which suggests
the age of Sydney and what stage she is at
in school. I also used a psychology book as
the name of my film 'Alter Ego' is another
word for the disability schizophrenia,
which is a disability that strongly related to
psychology. My film is not about a girl who
has schizophrenia however it links with the
title.
