4. From my preliminary task I have developed a lot more skills to
help me make my music magazine look professional and
resemble a music magazine. My progression has definitely
improved in all areas .e.g. photography, text. When I made my
preliminary task I didn’t really know how to use Photoshop
effectively, and this is why the images are not enhanced or
edited, the text is not appealing and the task itself does not
resemble a magazine. My preliminary task is very plain and
had a very bland colour scheme (house style) and doesn’t look
very presentable. I did find Photoshop difficult to use, and still
did when making my final production, this is why my
preliminary task is very minimalistic and plain, because I didn’t
know how to make it look like a school magazine. The
background of my photos are very simple and I don’t feel the
background fits with the colour of text, I thought at first the
colours would work, but they don’t. The font is blurry, and
doesn’t really stand out which is what the main font should do.
After making my preliminary task I knew that I had to try my
hardest to make my music magazine resemble an actual music
magazine, which meant I had to try and learn how to use
Photoshop effectively so that I would not struggle like I did
when making my preliminary task. In my final production the
images stand out more and have been enhanced, so the images
look like they belong on a music magazine (especially my front
cover image) I have also made the font more clear, effective
and stand out. I have positioned everything carefully to make
sure that my entire magazine is presentable and looks
professional.
PROGRESSION
5. LEARNING
To create my music magazine (Front cover, contents page and double page
spread) I did a lot of research on music magazines and the music industry and
used information from my codes and conventions research. I found researching
everything I needed to know before making my music magazine very helpful as
I knew exactly what I needed to do, what I needed to include etc., whereas
when I made my preliminary I didn’t have anything to work from or anything to
help me create my preliminary task. My front cover and double page spread for
my preliminary task look nothing like my final production. This Is because my
final production does resemble a music magazine, but my preliminary did not
resemble a magazine, also I know how to use Photoshop now which allowed
me to experiment more which I could not do before. My music magazine is a lot
more complex compared to my preliminary task as I have tried my hardest to
make it look presentable and also now know how to make it look like a
magazine. I know how to enhance images, add text, add colour to text, change
fonts, move the text behind an image (main heading). I took various images for
my magazine so I had a variety to choose from for my front cover, contents
page and double page spread. I wanted the lighting to be bright and high key
so I tested the lighting with different images until I found which lighting I
preferred the best. The mise en scene for my images was a plain white
background as I didn’t want the background to distract the attention away
from the main image, as I feel the main image really needs to stand out. I tried
lots of different angles and shot types when taking my images to try and create
the best images for my magazine.
6. LEARNING For my front cover and contents page for my music
magazine I have used different photos and enhanced
them and used a continuous house style throughout my
magazine, which linked the artists name (Cara Aurellie-
Aurellie meaning ‘Gold’) which is why she is called the
‘Golden Girl’ and her golden, blonde hair together. I did
this because I knew it made my magazine seem more
professional. I edited my images on Photoshop, I made
my front cover image brighter and changed the image to
black and white, I did this as I feel black and white is
more visually interesting and attractive and it was easier
to make brighter. I also added a red tint to her lips to
stand out to the audience. The use of black and white is
also not a very common convention of a music magazine.
My main masthead really stands out compared to the
masthead on my preliminary task, it’s gold and sits in
front of the main image, whereas in my preliminary the
masthead is white and does not stand out because the
background is also very light. I looked at other music
magazines to see what kind of masthead I would need to
make mine seem appealing and resemble one you would
see on a music magazine. I made sure that I sent all my
ideas to my focus group and made sure they agreed with
me and gave me feedback before I made any changes to
my magazine. In conclusion I have definitely improved
from my preliminary to my final production as my music
magazine I feel does resemble other music magazines.
