Evaluation question2
1. Question 2
Evaluation – How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
By Elliot Metaireau
2. Social Groups:
Our media product represents this certain social group in the way that the
actors/characters within the film are meant to represent older teenagers - young adults so
it makes sense to give this social group as an example. Also the fact that it’s thriller - like
and supposedly a little action packed is more for an audience of adults and quite possibly
more males to females. After our feedback from the Prelimary and after analysing the
Adults questionnaire as a whole, the data received told us that the younger generation/very
young adults are more into the comedy genre, whereas after internet research, older
males are more into the tension – rising genre, because modern comedy was much
different to what it was years ago, but action movies or thriller’s hasn’t change it’s way of
entertaining people. Another thing to mention, if the film were to represent this social
group, then for sexuality, more males would of preferred to what this compared to
females, again this would make sense considering both males and females have fairly
different tastes.
As said before, the film created would certainly represent the adult social group because
of the fact that it would appeal more to them then any other social group, as well as this
the actors are supposedly meant to come across as “Agents” so the same age as adults.
However the questionnaire feedback does say that more younger males to females do
prefer the thriller genre because of the way it creates suspension and contains violence,
two things that boys are very much in to.
Teenage boys
The two main actors within the film are also two males, the female from the beginning of
the product was shot in a way that it shows dominancy for the other sexuality, hence why
more boys would prefer this compared to girls. All in all, because of how old the characters
are and that it’s a genre that will never change its dimension (whereas comedy has), just
goes to shows that adults would represent better than any other social group, however
teenagers are the closest thing to another representation.
3. Positive and Negative Stereotypes:
Considering that there were only 3 characters to analyse or define whether or not they
were bad or good stereotypes, we felt as though they all played a completely different
role as in one was good, bad and the other murdered. We thought it was quite original
compared to other Final tasks we looked at in the past, for example a meeting indoors,
Positives one guy sitting down (in charge of the meeting) acting very cool and very serious, when all
of a sudden the person he is potentially interviewing/meeting happens to be a killer
seeking for something he has, the next part is predictable, as in the owner gets killed.
With this type of idea, we wanted to change it up and add more tension within the
atmosphere by creating a running scene with an agent (playing as the villain), then a
stranger (coming across as a bad character) whom plays the good guy. This combination is
slightly out of place and more positive than negative, cause of the fact that both
characters have changed roles to make it less stereotypical. Then again most thriller’s or
action movies these days consist of adults playing as bad guys, good guys or even adults,
so it creates a contrast.
Even though we changed up the roles and made good characters in to bad then bad
characters in to good, we felt as though the characters still came across as slightly
stereotypical. For example there is always a killing within the first 3 minutes of most
thriller films, which is what we did at the very beginning, however we did the killing with a
Negatives female to make it better in the way that most killings happen because of two males
fighting, so doing it with a female makes her more vulnerable and because of the high
camera shot used, makes her look powerless when running or dead on the floor. In other
words, its different and if something were more different about a home – made thriller to
a normal thriller movie like this example then surely it comes across as less stereotypical
(depending on the characters). We definitely could of made other characters like a Dealer
with the brief case to show no stereotypes.
4. Representations of different social groups in TV Drama:
Waterloo Road is a program that I have studied before because the
one social group of which it clearly represents are teenagers/young
adults. Even though it’s not the same exact social group as our
product, its still a comparison to ours. The reason why its
completely targeted at teenagers is because of the fact that it’s set
in a school so whatever people are going through in here are
probably the same as to what people are going through in our
society.
Normally people of the same social group as a TV drama are said to
become more attracted to what it’s about or what they are
watching, hence why with our product, it contains adults with jobs
doing `
there own thing, whereas in Waterloo Road it’s a bunch of
students in school doing what teachers are telling them to do.
On the other hand Hawaii 5 O is a program of which shows
complete contrast to Waterloo Road, this one shows a similarity to
what our product is all about, because of the fact that it has the
same story line with a bunch of adults whom happen to be
agents/police and are chasing those who need to be stopped, it’s
thriller packed it creates suspension easily like our film.
Like I said before, those of the same social group of the TV drama
will have/show more of an interest to watch that particular thing
compared to another social group. Obviously other social groups
will be watching this thriller packed genre, like Hawaii 5 O is also
targeted at teenagers because it has an age restriction of 12 years.
