WHAT’S A PETTING ZOO?
 A Technology Petting Zoo is an opportunity for library patrons to
try out gadgets.
 Our zoo will have several commonly used gadgets.
• iPad
• Kindle
• More!

 Patrons can learn about our library’s
digital ecosystem from petting zoo events.
DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM
*For more information about Digital Ecosystems.
 A digital ecosystem describes technologies (gadgets or computers)

and software (applications or apps) that work together to deliver
content to an end user (library patron).
• The El Paso Public Library has many digital offerings that work in
conjunction with other technologies, apps and even with social
media.
• Not all ecosystems are compatible!
• For example, apps for Apple won’t work on an Android.
• Kindle books are best viewed on a Kindle or Kindle app.

 You will learn what items work together as we continue training.

• You will have one of the highest levels of skill at your branch in:

Promoting library digital resources
Second level and above troubleshooting for gadgets and some digital resources.

 You will be responsible for:
• Training your branch staff…

to promote digital services
to help patrons with problems relating to digital services
to help patrons with their own gadgets.

• Coordinating petting zoo events at your branch.
• Providing classes, open house events and other patron training (as needed).
YOU ARE THE EXPERT
 You will promote our digital resources in new and creative ways.
 And you must LOVE gadgets!

architecture. Google is very involved in Android development.

 There are many versions of Android in the “Wild.”
• They are named alphabetically after desserts. (ie. Jellybean.)

Orientation for trainers must love gadgets

  • 1. MUST LOVE GADGETS: TECHNOLOGY PETTING ZOO Trainer Orientation El Paso Public Library
  • 2. WHAT’S A PETTING ZOO?  A Technology Petting Zoo is an opportunity for library patrons to try out gadgets.  Our zoo will have several commonly used gadgets. • iPad • Kindle • More!  Patrons can learn about our library’s digital ecosystem from petting zoo events.
  • 3. DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM *For more information about Digital Ecosystems.  A digital ecosystem describes technologies (gadgets or computers) and software (applications or apps) that work together to deliver content to an end user (library patron). • The El Paso Public Library has many digital offerings that work in conjunction with other technologies, apps and even with social media. • Not all ecosystems are compatible! • For example, apps for Apple won’t work on an Android. • Kindle books are best viewed on a Kindle or Kindle app.  You will learn what items work together as we continue training.

CHANGE IS NOW  eBook reading is increasing.  Patrons want to come to Tech Petting Zoos.  Our collection isn’t only paper—it’s also digital.  Understanding the digital is just as essential as knowing how to find a book or answer a reference question.  Helping patrons with primary level tech problems is GOOD customer service for the library.
  • 6. NUMBERS OF CHANGE Reasons for using eReaders vary, but many people want quick access to new books and a wide selection. Consumer Reports can be accessed through EBSCO. EBSCOhost App: Research on the go Career Cruising: Online career guidance & Research. Chilton Library: Engine repair Live Mocha: Online Language learning Morningstar: Investment, stocks & financial information.  Patrons expect library staff to be experts… and if you don’t have the answer, to know how to find it.  Become familiar with our ecosystem!

YOU ARE THE EXPERT  As a trainer for your branch, you will become an expert. • You will have one of the highest levels of skill at your branch in: • • • Digital Ecosystem knowledge (gadgets and apps) Promoting library digital resources Second level and above troubleshooting for gadgets and some digital resources.  You will be responsible for: • Training your branch staff… • • • to promote digital services to help patrons with problems relating to digital services to help patrons with their own gadgets. • Coordinating petting zoo events at your branch. • Providing classes, open house events and other patron training (as needed).
  • 10. YOU ARE THE EXPERT  You will promote our digital resources in new and creative ways.  And you must LOVE gadgets! • • • • Get excited and let others share in the fun! Learn everything you can about gadgets. Play, play, play! Learn about new gadgets as they come along. (Mashable is a great blog to read.) • Keep sharing, keep teaching.

  • 12. GADGETS: ANDROID  Android is an Operating System built using Open Source and a Linux architecture. Google is very involved in Android development.  Most, but not all, Android apps are available from Google Play or Amazon App Store.  There are many versions of Android in the “Wild.” • They are named alphabetically after desserts. (ie. Jellybean.)  Our Zoo includes: • • • • Asus Google Nexus Samsung Galaxy Tab Kindle Fire HD Nook HD+

GADGETS: ANDROID  Other Android Gadgets you may see in the wild include: • • • Android Smart phones Android Tablets and eReaders Nook Color  Troubleshooting an Android means you need to know what version it is. These include: • • • • • • • 2.1 (Eclair) 2.2 (Froyo) 2.3 (Gingerbread) 3.0 (Honeycomb) 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) 4.1 (Jellybean) 4.4 (KitKat)
  • 14. GADGETS: APPLE IOS  Apple iOS is made and maintained by Apple.  Apple applications are very stable in nature. Older versions (if needed) of Apple apps can be downloaded from the App Store.  Our Zoo Includes: • iPad • iPad mini
  • 15. GADGETS: APPLE & OTHER  Other Apple Gadgets that can use library apps are: • iPod Touch • iPhone • iPod (different varieties) (with various file types)  Other kinds of Gadgets seen are: • Kobo • Sony Readers • Kindles with eInk

But it will be an exciting journey. • Please communicate with both your manager and the Petting Zoo Training team to ensure you have enough time to train! • Ask questions, please!  Training will include visuals, handouts, video and hands-on experience.  Copies of training will be available to all in the S: Drive.
