This new collaborative, big data analysis process is called Data Science. The Harvard Business Review recently called Data Scientist the sexiest job of the 21st century. It must be real for the Harvard Business Review to have this kind of headline. But, Data Science isn’t just about the Data Scientist. It’s about the complete team and the iterative, collaborative process of Data Science.Business Intelligence was primarily about operational analysis of the history of the business or current state of the business. How did we do last quarter? Or, what is our inventory level? Business Intelligence is based on data models and reports that are defined far ahead of time, then carefully built over a period of months or years. This old model is slow-moving, rigid and pre-defined. It was also a standalone process where the outcome was a report.Data Science is about experimentation and iteration with a dynamic data set. It’s about being able to bring in a new set of data immediately, combine it with an existing set of data and find a unique insight. It’s also about predicting the future, rather than examining the past. And, very often the big data and the prediction are built into the application rather than left standalone.One way to think about the difference is with an analogy we all know: Internet queries. Can you imagine if you had to call Google ahead of time to ask them to load the data you want to query? Or, if your Google queries took hours or days to finish? That’s the world of BI. The world of data science is instant query results, so you can realize your search terms were wrong and add some new modifiers to get what you are looking for.
