1. Brandon Miller chapter 7
Every student experiences the frustration of working hard to remember something that seems
irrelevant.
• How do you handle this?
Naturally I would do my best to take a good amount of notes highlight and indent because I can forget
things at times and that is not an option especially when you need the grade for that specific class that is
important in order for one to pass the class.
• How should you handle it?
I believe that you should be able to handle it in a professional matter by following the steps given one of
which is to choosing a system that will cause one to engage actively with the material. Another method
can be using the journalists’ questions to design the study plan with the following when? Which can be
how much time do you need and what time of day is best for you as well as knowing when to stop
studying? And another one could be where? And for that one you must minimize distractions also a key
one is who? Which means by following guidelines for working in groups what and why? Which means to
choose prioritized materials to study and finally how Using strategies that work for you.
• What memorization techniques do you resist trying?
I think one method in particular I resist trying to do is the mind map and I say this because I never have
put an effort into planning things or doing an outline before I work and for me I believe that is one habit
an individual should never have when it comes to school work because I have just gotten through or
maybe I should say I got lucky through the years and if I could say anything to the young minds of the
next generation. I would use this information I have learned and teach them so that in life when
planning they are one step ahead.
• Is it because they seem too unrelated to the information, or too goofy?
No I would not say that but personally for me that type of style is never something I have never gotten
the time to try out and use as an advantage when studying.
• What would you be willing to try?
Yes indeed in fact I think I will use this method and perhaps the other ones given here to my advantage
so that in the future I am well prepared and ready in fact I think I would teach it to others as stated
above to anyone I see who needs help with study habits.
2. • What does Norton’s story mean for you?
Well when I look at norton’s story here in the text I have noticed that me and him have similarities
because me and him both struggled through fourth grade to high school and he like I said earlier barely
got past with c’s and d+’s but we can see here that in the end he applies himself and he shows
improvement and that is good to see progress.
• What effects can take you beyond your world?
The effects that can take me beyond my world is I can apply myself by using some of the very good
study habits I mentioned above. Helping others and possibly explaining how I struggled so they can get a
good understanding that I know what they are going through and possibly use norton’s story as an
example as well.
• What can you learn from Norton’s case about memory and study strategies?
I think I can learn from Norton that we can learn how to use study strategies by taking notes and even
using some of the ones mentioned in the book for example the color technique which I think is fun and
pretty useful but in all honestly we can see that Norton applied himself here and used it to his
advantage to succeed by improving.
• What can you learn from Norton about analytical, creative, and practical thinking?
Well I think when it comes to all three parts of thinking I believe we can learn from Norton that using
these three methods come in handy when it comes to memory and studying strategies because let’s use
practical thinking for an example Practical thinking means thinking with a view to action. That is, only
focusing on thoughts that work and can be applied in the real world. Any other thoughts would be
impractical or abstract thinking so with that said we can see Norton used this method to his advantage
and applied himself.
