Question 1
Who would the audience be for your media
product?
Who would the audience be for your media product?
Primary Audience
The primary audience of my rock magazine ‘Biblical’ are Male students aged 16-24. This is
because the colour scheme used and the features included in my magazine will stereotypically
appeal to males. Also, another reason my rock magazines target audience is males is because the
rock genre of music is also stereotypically aimed a male audience, because rock is seen as
more manly than feminine and rock artists are mostly male. Through my research I also found
that males are more likely to buy rock magazines as statistics show for a rock magazine 84%
of buyers were male and 16% were female.

Secondary Audience
My secondary audience for my magazine ‘Biblical’ will be
females; also students age 16-25. This is because rock
music does also have a female fan base, despite it
stereotypically being aimed at males.
Both my target audiences will be students and will most likely have a low
income, due to them being students and therefore being at college,
university or only having a part time job. Therefore my magazine will be at
an affordable price of £2.50 again making ‘Biblical’ appeal to them. Also
at this age my target audience will be finding themselves and
experiencing new things so this genre of music may become a big
influence to their lives and ‘Biblical’ will promote the lifestyle rock music
provides such as going to festivals and wearing band merchandise.

This my mood board showing visually what my
target audience would be like.
(Interests, Ethnicity, Age ect…)
Who would the audience be for your media product?

audience will be British people. But, this does
not mean it cannot expand to other countries.

Typically people who are interested and have a
passion for the Rock genre of music.

Who would the audience be for your media product?

Biffy Clyro
Biffy Clyro are very famous within
the rock genre and therefore would
attract their fans who would be a
part of my target audience
persuading them to by Biblical.

Audience
idols

Whilst conducting my research I have been
looking at some of the biggest stars within
the rock genre and used them as my
inspiration for the artists in Biblical. This is
because they would attract my target
audience to read Biblical as they are a part
of the rock genre, and therefore their fans
will be part of my target audience. I created
bands for my magazine that would fit all
the boxes of a rock band wether it be punk
rock or metal so it would make Biblical
more successful.
I would not include people such as Justin
Bieber, One Direction or Beyoncé ect… as
they are part of the pop genre and would
attract a completely different target
audience.

Taylor Momson
She is the front woman of a hard rock
band and therefore would appeal to my
target audience as most of them are
likely to be fans. I used her as
inspiration for my cover artist ‘Hollie
Hatton’ to ensure she would meet all
the conventions of a rock front
woman therefore ensuring Biblical
appealed to the target audience.

Fall Out Boy
They are a punk rock band that appear in many magazines which are similar to
biblical such as kerrang! Their music is part of the sub genre ‘Punk-rock’ They would
appeal to my target audience as Biblical will include all the sub-genres that branch
from the main genre rock. Therefore, their fans will be part of my target audience
persuading them to buy my magazine, this is because it will appeal to them as they will
most likely be passionate about the band and genre of music.
Who would the audience be for your media product?
The ideal reader for my magazine ‘Biblical’ is someone who
is a fan of rock music and wants to live the life style rock
music provides. For example, going to gigs regularly,
attending festivals, wearing particular clothes such as band
merchandise and drinking energy drinks. My magazine
will promote this life style by offering the chance to win
free tickets to gigs and festivals and having a weekly
feature on them. Also, the adverts in my magazine will be of
stores that provide the particular clothing they would
stereotypically want to wear. Also, an ideal reader of Biblical
should be passionate about the music within rock genre,
and all the sub-genres branching off it as Biblical mainly
focuses on the music the band creates instead of it being
only about the actual members, which is what you would
come across in a pop magazine feature about a boy band.
In Biblical, during features such as interviews there will be a
mix of questions but they will mostly about the music they
make. Therefore, my ideal readers need to have a passion for
the music the band creates, as well as a passion for the actual
members themselves. My ideal readers will also want
ownership over things within the rock genre, and if they do,
Biblical will appeal to them as it is a magazine which they can
keep unlike a webzine which changes regularly. If they do
want this ownership they will be willing to pay for Biblical.

Ideal
readers
Who would the audience be for your media product?
Examples of a products similar to my own on the market at
the moment are Kerrang! and Rock Sound as they are both
UK-based magazines. Like Biblical they are both devoted to
rock music.

Question 2
How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
The star I have created for my magazine represents my Ideal reader
through:
• Her clothes- She is wearing band merchandise which is what my
target audience would stereotypically wear.
• Her expression- She is pulling a face and in comparison to smiling the
expression connotes rebellion and is very informal. Also she is using
direct mode of address which can connote intimidation in this
context, but also shouts out the reader to buy the magazine, as it seems
more personal and creates a bond between reader and cover star.
Both also link to the genre of rock music as they connote the same
things. The social group my target audience are stereotypically a
part of are seen as intimidating, rebellious and informal within
society. So this picture represents them.
• Her hair colour- My ideal readers are stereotypically likely to have
bright hair colours, to stand out from the crowd and be rebellious,
just like rock music does. Therefore, my cover star represents them in
this way also. It also gives them someone to aspire to be like and base
their look on.
• Lip piercing- Again this stereotypically links to the rock genre and my
ideal readers are likely to have piercings as part of the rock fan style.
How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
All these points connote a rebellious
side and stray away from the
traditional conventions of a female
stars such as girly or sex symbols for
example like BeyoncĂŠ, Miley Cyrus, or
Katy Perry. Therefore my secondary
audience of females would aspire to be
like her and my primary audience of
males would be likely to find her
attractive. This ensures I meet both my
primary and secondary audience needs.
They can also relate to her and see
themselves in her, which would appeal
to them, persuading them to buy my
magazine.
How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
To appeal to my target audience the stars within
my magazine would have to be idealised versions
of the reader. They would have to be relatable so my
target audience will see them as role models within
the rock genre. In order to appeal to as many rock
fans as possible my cover stars must be
non – mainstream, promote independence and
being different and be within the rock genre in
some way whether it be lead singer or drummer. I
used Taylor Momson, lead singer of hard rock band
The Pretty Reckless as inspiration for my cover star
so I could guarantee I met all the conventions of a
rock front woman. Taylor Momson, also being an
actress, filters her look depending on who her
audience is, so she will appeal to them, and also so
they can relate and aspire to be like her. This
means she will not come across as intimidating or
different to her fans.
How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Her facial expression is
very positive as she is
smiling and looking
happy. Again
appearing to be a
positive role model as
young girls may aspire
to be like this.

She appears to be
encouraging natural
beauty with her
‘Barely there’
makeup.
On this image she is
wearing bright
clothing which are all
feminine. Each colour
connotes positivity,
which is why it would
appeal to the audience
of young teenage girls
as she is seen as a
positive role model.

She would not wear
this when fronting
her band as it does
not fit in with the
rock genre and
therefore would not
appeal to her fans.

Her long hair is
styled messily to
link to her style and
genre of music her
band makes.

Her stockings and
suspenders are
sexual and
encourage the
male gaze as they
would find her
attractive. This
expands her
audience.

How she looks here would not be
appropriate for her acting job as it
would not appeal or be
appropriate for her audience.
However, it is appropriate for
being a rock front woman. I have
used her look here for inspiration
for my cover star.
Her eyeliner is very
heavy which is a
stereotypical look
for fans of the rock
genre and Taylor
Momson is
conforming to this
to meet all the
conventions of a
rock front woman.

Her boots are
big the buckles
connote
aggression.
They link to the
genre of rock.
How does your media product represent particular
social groups?

COVER STAR
When I was doing photography for my cover star I aimed to make sure she would be aspirational to my
audience. I ensured I chose somebody who would fit in with the rock genre and meet all the conventions
of a rock front woman. I did this by taking photos of her pulling faces that made her look confident and
rebellious as she is not just naturally smiling. My cover star is wearing a band merchandise, leather, and
tartan. All these materials link to the stereotypical fashion within the rock genre, therefore she would be
relatable to my audience and they could look at her as an inspiration. She also has bright, unnatural
hair and piercings again meaning she conforms to the norms of the stereotypical rock look. All the
factors overall make the image look rebellious, another connotation of rock music.
Question 3
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
The institution that would sell my magazine would
be ‘MAMA’ which is a independent institution that
owns and operates some of the best-known live
music venues United Kingdom and
internationally, hosts many festivals and events
and also creates, manages and distributes music
and entertainment content through their venues,
festivals, tech platforms and publications.

I chose this institution because after research, I
noticed it sold a monthly magazine named ‘The
Fly Magazine’ that focused on indie music.
Therefore, I believe this institution would benefit
from a weekly magazine that focused on rock
music-Biblical. As it also sells one more music
magazine, this means it would have experience in
this area which would make Biblical more
successful, but not over looked.
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
As the institution owns venues and hosts events, my
magazine could be advertised at gigs in the
venues or festivals, for example by sponsorship,
posters, merchandise or free issues made
especially for the particular event. This would
advertise my magazine very successfully and
guarantee it was advertised to as many consumers
as possible. Also, I could advertise the venues and
festivals within the magazine, making the
institution better known. Therefore, Biblical and
MAMA would both complement each other well.
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
I believe this would eventually lead to Biblical
having many cross media platforms, which
means the magazine would be distributed by
using a variety of different media forms
due to it being successful such as:
•

Radio

•

Music channel

•

Website

•

Award Ceremony

•

festival

2014
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
Merchandise

Merchandise allows the fans
of Biblical to be a part of the
magazine. It will be available
at Biblicals annual festival or
at any festivals/gigs it is the
sponsor of. It will also be
available to order on the
website and occasionally
biblical merchandise will be
the free gift that you get when
you buy the magazine. This is
a cross media platform as it is
expanding Biblical.
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
My main rival would be Kerrang! Magazine
as Biblical is similar. However, Kerrang! is
owned by a very large multinational
institution named ‘Bauer Media’ and despite
this institution being bigger and more well
known than MAMA, I believe an independent
institution selling a rock magazine will
appeal to the target audience more as they
stereotypically do not enjoy mainstream
things for example mainstream music or
clothing. They will beable to relate more to
the magazine this way and therefore it will
appeal to them alot more. Another positive
reason about allowing an independent
institution to sell my magazine is that it does
not have alot of other publications to focus
on, meaning Biblical will get alot of
attention to ensure it is the best it can be
and nothing is overlooked.
Question 4
In what ways does your media product use,

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
When creating my magazine ‘Biblical’ I used magazines such as Kerrang and Rock sound as
my inspiration as they include the same music genre ‘Rock’ as my magazine Biblical.
Therefore, they would all have similar primary audience of male youths and secondary
target audiences of Female youths and would therefore be similar in style and content.
This allowed me to develop the forms and conventions of Kerrang and Rock sound to
create my own ideas for Biblical. This would ensure I met all the targets for a successful
music magazine. I did not challenge any of the typical forms and conventions of Rock music
magazines, I just developed them as my own for Biblical.
Examples of the 3 music magazines:
Kerrang:

Rock sound:

Biblical:

Front cover:

Kerrang was my main inspiration for my front cover as I feel they are one of the reasons kerrang is such a successful
music magazine as they appeal to and catch the eye of it’s target audiences and others, persuading them to buy it. It does
this with it’s use of colour, picture, style and layout. I wanted the Biblical front cover to be as successful as I feel the
Kerrang front cover is so I developed their ideas and created my own.

masthead is successful.

Kerrangs use of colour
on this particular
masthead is very
successful. Yellow
connotes danger which
links in with the
picture as Haley
Williams is wearing a
top with ‘security’ on it.
Also, the use of Black
and White together
makes each stand out
more than it usually
would, again linking to
the genre of the music
magazine as rock
music is considered to
be bold.

This particular front cover also uses the same
masthead font with a bold cover. This is always kept
the same on Kerrang front covers.

Both examples of Kerrang
have not used the same
colour pallet as each
other or stuck to a house
style. This is because of it’s
popularity with the fans
within the rock genre. It is
easily recognisable no
matter what layout or
colours they use. On some
Kerrang front covers the
Masthead has been

successful it is. This is why
I chose Kerrang to get
most of the inspiration for
my front cover so it uses
the correct forms and
conventions. However
Kerrang does stick to a
particular colour pallet
but uses it imaginatively
so all issues are unique
and different from one
another.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?

‘Rock sound’ has a different layout of
the front cover compared to Kerrang
and the magazine I created ‘Biblical.’
The main difference being that Rock
Sound is a lot more organized in the
way the front cover is set out.
Although it includes the same music
genre and has the same target
audience. The fonts and colours
used are also different to Kerrang and
my magazine ‘Biblical’ as they are not
as chaotic and bold. In my opinion
this is how Rock Sound is unique.
However the colours change
depending on the issue, but their
colour pallet is not as specific as
Kerrang or Biblical.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
This is my Front Cover
which includes all the
forms and conventions to
allow it to be a successful
rock music magazine.
The colour scheme I have
used is similar to Kerrangs
in a way that all colours
are bold and stand out
when used together.
I have used other pictures
on my front cover to link
with the articles I am
showing. This makes my
front cover have more on
it, and as a result making
it more appealing to the
eye. I have overlapped the
images and cut them out
so the star looks like they
are actually present on my
front cover, which is
effective.

interesting way to make it

My magazine includes all the
sub-genres within the rock
genre, from Metal to
Punk-rock. This will increase
the readers and make Biblical
more successful. This is my
unique selling point; to use
many sub genres of rock in
every issue of Biblical.
Kerrang is known to favourite
certain types of bands and
genres of rock.

The contents page for rock sound
is less chaotic than Kerrangs
contents page and focuses on a
few main points: the main image
and the main features within the
magazine. It does not have
typical contents page features
such as a letter from the editor,
which is what makes it unique.
However, I chose to make my

as I feel it is a more successful in
informing the audience, which is
the purpose of a contents page.

This is my contents page

the forms and conventions

purpose.
I have continued the colour
scheme from the front cover on to
the contents page to create a
house style and make my
magazine consistant throughout
and as a result it is made more
professional. They all work
together to emphasise important
points.
I have used images on my contents
page to make it look more full and to
accompany the features. I took the
idea from Kerrang to use an image

interest on the contents page as I
thought it made it look very
interesting and professional. The

How did you attract/address your audience?
The masthead of my magazine the audience well in my opinion. This is because
it is in a strong, bold colour that stands out against the background, catching
their eye, the colour is not stereotypically specific to either males or females, so
therefore it will appeal to both my primary and secondary audience. The font is
sharp as it has pointed edges which links to the genre of rock as rock music is
not considered ‘soft’ like pop music may be. The masthead is covered by the hair
of my cover star, this will appeal to the audience as rock music is not considered
‘neat’ or ‘ tidy’ and the layout of the front cover reflects this.

My cover star will appeal to the audience as she represents
stereotypically what rock fans are like or aspire to be like. This is
because of the brightly unnatural coloured hair, the piercings, the
band merchandise and the tartan clothing. All link to the genre of
music Biblical is about. She will appeal well whether the audience
like her band, see her as a role model, or are attracted to her. Overall,
she makes a good cover star which will help Biblical sell.

The use of other bands and artists within the rock genre means that
my audience is expanded. If someone does not like the main cover
star, there are still alot more bands featured so something will be
likely to appeal to them, so they buy my magazine.
How did you attract/address your audience?
Providing posters within the magazine attracts the audience as
it provides them with ownership over something they are
passionate about- in this case bands and rock music. It also
gives them something for free with the magazine. Posters will
attract certain fans if their favourite bands are on them,
expanding the audience who are buying Biblical.

The colour scheme I have used for the front cover uses a colour
pallet of Grey, Red, Yellow, Black, and white. They all work
with each other to ensure what needs to stand out does, to
catch the eye of the audience to persuade them to buy the
magazine. The grey background provides an interesting
background that is not overpowering. It provides a good base
for all the brighter colours to stand out on in contrast, for
example the red masthead and the yellow banner. The yellow
banner is a specific colour as it is the colour of Reading and
Leeds festival, so it will stand out instantly and attract people
who have attended or are planning on attending.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Using pictures emphases the main articles within the magazine and draws the
reader in. Pictures make the contents page more attractive to the eye. I have added
pictures near or underneath text it is linked too, this adds more to the page and
creates a more interesting contents page, it allows my magazine to be kept to the
organised chaos style. The pictures link to the rock genre and the features within
this issue of my magazine, so they will appeal to the readers.

Competitions are a way for readers to get involved and a
chance to win items that link to the rock genre. This allows
them to be part of the lifestyle. The word “WIN!” is a buzz
word which stands out, and therefore attracts the reader. It
helps the magazine become more personal to the reader,
which is another appealing factor. My magazine will
contain competitions every week as I feel it is an important
factor in attracting the audience.
How did you attract/address your audience?
By including an editors letter, and using words such as ‘you’ and phrases such as
‘see you next week’ it allows the reader to feel a personal connection. It makes them
feel that they are a part of the magazine and get involved with what is happening
with the creators. The editor also fits in with the audience as she looks the part with
her coloured hair, expression and clothing. This creates a bond between the reader
and editor as they will see her to be like them.

I have used the same colour pallet on my
contents page as I have the front cover.
This is to keep a consistent house style
throughout. The colours work well with
each other and allow what needs to stand
out, to do this. This is so the most
important parts stand out to the reader.
Question 6
What have you learnt about

What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
Firstly I created the background for my
magazine front cover. I decided on a white
background that faded into light grey. I did this
by making the background grey and then using
the eraser tool to create a white circle that fades
into grey.

I added the banner at the top using the shape
tool and made it yellow, added text with the text
tool and added logos that link to it. I then added
the masthead. I did not like the fonts on
photoshop so I created it online and copied and
pasted it onto my magazine.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?

I then added the picture of my cover star. I did
this by firstly removing the background by
cutting round her with the magnetic lasso tool
and then using the background eraser.

I did the same with this image.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process
of constructing this product?

I then added all the features by
creating them with shape tools
and text tools. I made sure
everything on my magazine
front cover was layered.

PUGS

I used pugs on my magazine front cover to put
information on in an interesting way. This ensures my
magazine is attractive to the eye and is appealing to
the audience. It also allows offers to stand out for
example I have put “Only £1” in a yellow pug that looks
like an explosion. This ensures the audience see it
straight away and are persuaded to buy the magazine.

Large, bold main feature

I put the name of the cover star in a large
bold font and cover to ensure it stands out in
contrast to the background and ensures it is
read by the audience. I have put the caption
of the main image in a blue colour which
stands out as it has only been used for this
text, showing the audience it is part of the
main feature. I have anchored the text over
the main image to make my magazine cover
interesting and to ensure the main image and
the caption are obviously linked.
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression to the full product?
I changed the colour of the first letter to make the
masthead interesting and include more colours on
my front cover. Also, the college uses this design for
their logo, so by using it on my magazine it fits in
with the college.

Features
I put some of the features of my magazine on my front cover.

The colour scheme I used on this magazine is
predominantly red. I did this because red
connotes leadership and passion which are both
positive connotations for a college magazine to
have. The white background is used so the other
colours and features on the front cover are
emphasised to catch the audiences attention. I
also included yellow and blue to emphasise
important text even further and let the audience
know that they should read it.
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression to the full product?

Photography
The cover stars eyes are looking directly at the camera,
therefore giving the audience eye contact which creates a
personal link between them. It also connotes confidence
which is appealing and will therefore make the audience
want to find out more about her music.
The cover star is smiling and looking happy giving the
magazine a positive vibe.
I made the main image have a white background on Adobe
Photoshop which creates negative space and emphasises
the cover star, text and all the other features.

All the images I have used for my college magazine feature
people in college themselves. Therefore, they are the same
age as my target audience meaning the magazine wont
come across as intimidating and the audience will beable to
relate.
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression to the full product?

Choosing my photography
I did not use this image as it has
been taken near a corner so the
lighting would not make my front
cover look professional. Also the
cover stars position is not directly
at the camera but also not directly
from the side so it would not be
suited to a be the main image of
magazine front cover.
I chose this image for the front
cover as the cover star will be the
point of interest on my magazine
cover as she is directly in the
centre and is emphasised by a
plain white background I added in
on Adobe Photoshop. She is
looking directly at the audience
which helps portray her
personality as confident which will
link to the story as she is a
musician.

I did not use this image as it has a very
busy background which would take the
emphasis away from the text and other
images on the magazine. Also the cover
star falls directly in
the right column so therefore it would
not be suitable for a magazine front
cover.
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression to the full product?

Contents Page

Technologies used:
• Microsoft publisher
• Adobe Photoshop
• Digital camera
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression to the full product?

PUGS

I used pugs on my contents page to
again display information in an
interesting way that would make my
contents page more appealing to the
eye. By using pugs on my contents
page, the same colour and shape as
the ones on my front page it creates a
house style which makes my
magazine professional as a whole.

Page numbers and features

This part of the contents page is the
most important feature as it tells the
reader where to find particular
articles and what briefly what they
are about. Therefore I tried to make it
interesting to read by changing the
font and text size to make it more
interesting to read in comparison to a
list using the same font and font size.
Also, this makes my magazine unique
as you normally do not find this in
magazines.
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression to the full product?

Heading

I have made the heading of
the contents page the same
font and colour as the
masthead on the front cover.
This is because I felt it
worked well and made my
magazine look interesting
and link to the actual college
itself. Also, by doing this I
have created a house style
and as a result making my
magazine more professional.

Letter from the editor

I included a letter from the editor
on the contents page of my
magazine as I felt it would make
the magazine seem more personal,
by using words such as ‘you’ which
would appeal to the reader. It also
gives them a chance to become
involved with the magazine.
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression to the full product?
Front page

I feel I have improved from creating my college magazine front cover to making my music magazine
front cover, and I have learned a lot of new skills during my production for example using Photoshop. I
think a reason my music magazine front cover is a lot stronger than my college magazine is because I
created all of it using Photoshop; whereas I only used Photoshop to edit pictures in my college
magazine. By using a programme suited to the task it has resulted in me creating a more professional
front cover. I feel if I created my college front cover with the skills I now have from making my music
magazine front cover it would be a lot better than it is. The main thing I would change on my college
magazine front cover is the colour scheme and use another main colour as well as red as I feel it is very
plain on its own and I could make it stronger and more eye catching using 2 main colours. Overall, I
am happy with how my Biblical magazine has turned out.
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression to the full product?
Contents page

I again feel like my contents page for my music magazine is a lot better than my contents page for my
college magazine. I again used Photoshop for all my music magazine contents page and only to edit
pictures on my college magazine contents page; and I think there is a significant difference. If I could
change how I created my college magazine as a whole the main difference would definitely be using
Photoshop over Microsoft Publisher. If I could go back and change my college contents page I would
add a lot more features as I feel it is very plain and bare and I would also use a brighter, more eye
catching colour scheme as I feel it does not live up to the expectations of a good contents page that will
appeal to the audience. Overall, I am happy with my music magazine contents page as I feel it is very
professional and would make a good contents page that would appeal to the target audience.

Media evaluation

  • 1. Name: Emily Barnett Candidate number : Centre: 33435 Aquinas College AS Media Studies OCR G321: Foundation Portfolio Brief from OCR syllabus
  • 2. Question 1 Who would the audience be for your media product?
  • 3. Who would the audience be for your media product? Primary Audience The primary audience of my rock magazine ‘Biblical’ are Male students aged 16-24. This is because the colour scheme used and the features included in my magazine will stereotypically appeal to males. Also, another reason my rock magazines target audience is males is because the rock genre of music is also stereotypically aimed a male audience, because rock is seen as more manly than feminine and rock artists are mostly male. Through my research I also found that males are more likely to buy rock magazines as statistics show for a rock magazine 84% of buyers were male and 16% were female. Secondary Audience My secondary audience for my magazine ‘Biblical’ will be females; also students age 16-25. This is because rock music does also have a female fan base, despite it stereotypically being aimed at males. Both my target audiences will be students and will most likely have a low income, due to them being students and therefore being at college, university or only having a part time job. Therefore my magazine will be at an affordable price of ÂŁ2.50 again making ‘Biblical’ appeal to them. Also at this age my target audience will be finding themselves and experiencing new things so this genre of music may become a big influence to their lives and ‘Biblical’ will promote the lifestyle rock music provides such as going to festivals and wearing band merchandise. This my mood board showing visually what my target audience would be like. (Interests, Ethnicity, Age ect…)
  • 4. Who would the audience be for your media product? British Male Biblical is a British magazine so the target audience will be British people. But, this does not mean it cannot expand to other countries. Typically people who are interested and have a passion for the Rock genre of music. Age: 16-25 English language Biblical will originally be printed in the language English. Students Low income Demographic of my target audience
  • 5. Who would the audience be for your media product? British Female Biblical is a British magazine so the target audience will be British people. But, this does not mean it cannot expand to other countries. Typically people who are interested and have a passion for the Rock genre of music. Age: 16-25 English language Biblical will originally be printed in the language English. Students Low income Demographic of my secondary audience
  • 6. Who would the audience be for your media product? Biffy Clyro Biffy Clyro are very famous within the rock genre and therefore would attract their fans who would be a part of my target audience persuading them to by Biblical. Audience idols Whilst conducting my research I have been looking at some of the biggest stars within the rock genre and used them as my inspiration for the artists in Biblical. This is because they would attract my target audience to read Biblical as they are a part of the rock genre, and therefore their fans will be part of my target audience. I created bands for my magazine that would fit all the boxes of a rock band wether it be punk rock or metal so it would make Biblical more successful. I would not include people such as Justin Bieber, One Direction or BeyoncĂŠ ect… as they are part of the pop genre and would attract a completely different target audience. Taylor Momson She is the front woman of a hard rock band and therefore would appeal to my target audience as most of them are likely to be fans. I used her as inspiration for my cover artist ‘Hollie Hatton’ to ensure she would meet all the conventions of a rock front woman therefore ensuring Biblical appealed to the target audience. Fall Out Boy They are a punk rock band that appear in many magazines which are similar to biblical such as kerrang! Their music is part of the sub genre ‘Punk-rock’ They would appeal to my target audience as Biblical will include all the sub-genres that branch from the main genre rock. Therefore, their fans will be part of my target audience persuading them to buy my magazine, this is because it will appeal to them as they will most likely be passionate about the band and genre of music.
  • 7. Who would the audience be for your media product? The ideal reader for my magazine ‘Biblical’ is someone who is a fan of rock music and wants to live the life style rock music provides. For example, going to gigs regularly, attending festivals, wearing particular clothes such as band merchandise and drinking energy drinks. My magazine will promote this life style by offering the chance to win free tickets to gigs and festivals and having a weekly feature on them. Also, the adverts in my magazine will be of stores that provide the particular clothing they would stereotypically want to wear. Also, an ideal reader of Biblical should be passionate about the music within rock genre, and all the sub-genres branching off it as Biblical mainly focuses on the music the band creates instead of it being only about the actual members, which is what you would come across in a pop magazine feature about a boy band. In Biblical, during features such as interviews there will be a mix of questions but they will mostly about the music they make. Therefore, my ideal readers need to have a passion for the music the band creates, as well as a passion for the actual members themselves. My ideal readers will also want ownership over things within the rock genre, and if they do, Biblical will appeal to them as it is a magazine which they can keep unlike a webzine which changes regularly. If they do want this ownership they will be willing to pay for Biblical. Ideal readers
  • 8. Who would the audience be for your media product? Examples of a products similar to my own on the market at the moment are Kerrang! and Rock Sound as they are both UK-based magazines. Like Biblical they are both devoted to rock music. Similar products
  • 9. Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  • 10. How does your media product represent particular social groups? The star I have created for my magazine represents my Ideal reader through: • Her clothes- She is wearing band merchandise which is what my target audience would stereotypically wear. • Her expression- She is pulling a face and in comparison to smiling the expression connotes rebellion and is very informal. Also she is using direct mode of address which can connote intimidation in this context, but also shouts out the reader to buy the magazine, as it seems more personal and creates a bond between reader and cover star. Both also link to the genre of rock music as they connote the same things. The social group my target audience are stereotypically a part of are seen as intimidating, rebellious and informal within society. So this picture represents them. • Her hair colour- My ideal readers are stereotypically likely to have bright hair colours, to stand out from the crowd and be rebellious, just like rock music does. Therefore, my cover star represents them in this way also. It also gives them someone to aspire to be like and base their look on. • Lip piercing- Again this stereotypically links to the rock genre and my ideal readers are likely to have piercings as part of the rock fan style.
  • 11. How does your media product represent particular social groups? All these points connote a rebellious side and stray away from the traditional conventions of a female stars such as girly or sex symbols for example like BeyoncĂŠ, Miley Cyrus, or Katy Perry. Therefore my secondary audience of females would aspire to be like her and my primary audience of males would be likely to find her attractive. This ensures I meet both my primary and secondary audience needs. They can also relate to her and see themselves in her, which would appeal to them, persuading them to buy my magazine.
  • 12. How does your media product represent particular social groups? To appeal to my target audience the stars within my magazine would have to be idealised versions of the reader. They would have to be relatable so my target audience will see them as role models within the rock genre. In order to appeal to as many rock fans as possible my cover stars must be non – mainstream, promote independence and being different and be within the rock genre in some way whether it be lead singer or drummer. I used Taylor Momson, lead singer of hard rock band The Pretty Reckless as inspiration for my cover star so I could guarantee I met all the conventions of a rock front woman. Taylor Momson, also being an actress, filters her look depending on who her audience is, so she will appeal to them, and also so they can relate and aspire to be like her. This means she will not come across as intimidating or different to her fans.
  • 13. How does your media product represent particular social groups? Her facial expression is very positive as she is smiling and looking happy. Again appearing to be a positive role model as young girls may aspire to be like this. She appears to be encouraging natural beauty with her ‘Barely there’ makeup. On this image she is wearing bright clothing which are all feminine. Each colour connotes positivity, which is why it would appeal to the audience of young teenage girls as she is seen as a positive role model. She would not wear this when fronting her band as it does not fit in with the rock genre and therefore would not appeal to her fans. Her long hair is styled messily to link to her style and genre of music her band makes. Her stockings and suspenders are sexual and encourage the male gaze as they would find her attractive. This expands her audience. How she looks here would not be appropriate for her acting job as it would not appeal or be appropriate for her audience. However, it is appropriate for being a rock front woman. I have used her look here for inspiration for my cover star. Her eyeliner is very heavy which is a stereotypical look for fans of the rock genre and Taylor Momson is conforming to this to meet all the conventions of a rock front woman. Her boots are big the buckles connote aggression. They link to the genre of rock.
  • 14. How does your media product represent particular social groups? COVER STAR When I was doing photography for my cover star I aimed to make sure she would be aspirational to my audience. I ensured I chose somebody who would fit in with the rock genre and meet all the conventions of a rock front woman. I did this by taking photos of her pulling faces that made her look confident and rebellious as she is not just naturally smiling. My cover star is wearing a band merchandise, leather, and tartan. All these materials link to the stereotypical fashion within the rock genre, therefore she would be relatable to my audience and they could look at her as an inspiration. She also has bright, unnatural hair and piercings again meaning she conforms to the norms of the stereotypical rock look. All the factors overall make the image look rebellious, another connotation of rock music.
  • 15. Question 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  • 16. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? The institution that would sell my magazine would be ‘MAMA’ which is a independent institution that owns and operates some of the best-known live music venues United Kingdom and internationally, hosts many festivals and events and also creates, manages and distributes music and entertainment content through their venues, festivals, tech platforms and publications. I chose this institution because after research, I noticed it sold a monthly magazine named ‘The Fly Magazine’ that focused on indie music. Therefore, I believe this institution would benefit from a weekly magazine that focused on rock music-Biblical. As it also sells one more music magazine, this means it would have experience in this area which would make Biblical more successful, but not over looked.
  • 17. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? As the institution owns venues and hosts events, my magazine could be advertised at gigs in the venues or festivals, for example by sponsorship, posters, merchandise or free issues made especially for the particular event. This would advertise my magazine very successfully and guarantee it was advertised to as many consumers as possible. Also, I could advertise the venues and festivals within the magazine, making the institution better known. Therefore, Biblical and MAMA would both complement each other well.
  • 18. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? I believe this would eventually lead to Biblical having many cross media platforms, which means the magazine would be distributed by using a variety of different media forms due to it being successful such as: • Radio • Music channel • Website • Award Ceremony • RADIO 103.9 Annual gig/festival www.Biblical.co.u k MUSIC This would ensure my target audience could find my brand in other ways than the print magazine. festival 2014
  • 19. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Merchandise Merchandise allows the fans of Biblical to be a part of the magazine. It will be available at Biblicals annual festival or at any festivals/gigs it is the sponsor of. It will also be available to order on the website and occasionally biblical merchandise will be the free gift that you get when you buy the magazine. This is a cross media platform as it is expanding Biblical.
  • 20. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? My main rival would be Kerrang! Magazine as Biblical is similar. However, Kerrang! is owned by a very large multinational institution named ‘Bauer Media’ and despite this institution being bigger and more well known than MAMA, I believe an independent institution selling a rock magazine will appeal to the target audience more as they stereotypically do not enjoy mainstream things for example mainstream music or clothing. They will beable to relate more to the magazine this way and therefore it will appeal to them alot more. Another positive reason about allowing an independent institution to sell my magazine is that it does not have alot of other publications to focus on, meaning Biblical will get alot of attention to ensure it is the best it can be and nothing is overlooked.
  • 21. Question 4 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 22. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? When creating my magazine ‘Biblical’ I used magazines such as Kerrang and Rock sound as my inspiration as they include the same music genre ‘Rock’ as my magazine Biblical. Therefore, they would all have similar primary audience of male youths and secondary target audiences of Female youths and would therefore be similar in style and content. This allowed me to develop the forms and conventions of Kerrang and Rock sound to create my own ideas for Biblical. This would ensure I met all the targets for a successful music magazine. I did not challenge any of the typical forms and conventions of Rock music magazines, I just developed them as my own for Biblical. Examples of the 3 music magazines: Kerrang: Rock sound: Biblical:
  • 23. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Front cover: Kerrang was my main inspiration for my front cover as I feel they are one of the reasons kerrang is such a successful music magazine as they appeal to and catch the eye of it’s target audiences and others, persuading them to buy it. It does this with it’s use of colour, picture, style and layout. I wanted the Biblical front cover to be as successful as I feel the Kerrang front cover is so I developed their ideas and created my own. Banner Main image Kerrang uses a Bold, ‘in your face’ masthead to stand out and relate to the music genre of ‘Rock’ as it is also considered Bold and ‘in your face’ making their masthead is successful. Kerrangs use of colour on this particular masthead is very successful. Yellow connotes danger which links in with the picture as Haley Williams is wearing a top with ‘security’ on it. Also, the use of Black and White together makes each stand out more than it usually would, again linking to the genre of the music magazine as rock music is considered to be bold. pug Free items Legal requirements This particular front cover also uses the same masthead font with a bold cover. This is always kept the same on Kerrang front covers. Both examples of Kerrang have not used the same colour pallet as each other or stuck to a house style. This is because of it’s popularity with the fans within the rock genre. It is easily recognisable no matter what layout or colours they use. On some Kerrang front covers the Masthead has been covered showing just how successful it is. This is why I chose Kerrang to get most of the inspiration for my front cover so it uses the correct forms and conventions. However Kerrang does stick to a particular colour pallet but uses it imaginatively so all issues are unique and different from one another. Free items- persuade audience to buy the magazine and to give them ownership of something to do with the rock genre, therefore promoting the lifestyle. The layout of this particular Kerrang front cover is ‘messy chaos’ which links to the rock genre and the lifestyle it promotes as stereotypically rock fans are crazy and outgoing. This will appeal to the target audience. Main heading Legal requirements
  • 24. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? ‘Rock sound’ has a different layout of the front cover compared to Kerrang and the magazine I created ‘Biblical.’ The main difference being that Rock Sound is a lot more organized in the way the front cover is set out. Although it includes the same music genre and has the same target audience. The fonts and colours used are also different to Kerrang and my magazine ‘Biblical’ as they are not as chaotic and bold. In my opinion this is how Rock Sound is unique. However the colours change depending on the issue, but their colour pallet is not as specific as Kerrang or Biblical.
  • 25. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? This is my Front Cover which includes all the forms and conventions to allow it to be a successful rock music magazine. The colour scheme I have used is similar to Kerrangs in a way that all colours are bold and stand out when used together. I have used other pictures on my front cover to link with the articles I am showing. This makes my front cover have more on it, and as a result making it more appealing to the eye. I have overlapped the images and cut them out so the star looks like they are actually present on my front cover, which is effective. Banner allows me to put information on my front cover in an interesting way My masthead font links to the music genre as it has sharp edges and is in a bold colour. It is hidden behind the main image like Kerrang! Pug- This is a typical convention of any magazine as it allows you to give information in an interesting way to make it stand out. My magazine includes all the sub-genres within the rock genre, from Metal to Punk-rock. This will increase the readers and make Biblical more successful. This is my unique selling point; to use many sub genres of rock in every issue of Biblical. Kerrang is known to favourite certain types of bands and genres of rock. Legal requirements allow my magazine to be professional.
  • 26. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Contents page Kerrang was again my main inspiration for my contents page as I like the layout and the way it links to the rock genre and uses images. The heading is written in a banner in bright colours Heading so it stands out and is eye catching. The main image on the contents page is of a band member associated Legal information with the rock genre such as issue The features which would attract number, and date are arranged shows the people who are fans of horizontally magazine is her to buy the magazine. which is professional as it It is linked to one of the kerrangs house is a necessity. articles in the magazine style of and the audience are told organised where this article is by chaos. the page number that is Letter from the editor is a on top of the picture. main feature of a contents Promoting the page as it allows the The colour scheme on this magazine magazine to become more particular Kerrang colour further. personal and gives the scheme is very bright change of the audience to which is not how Kerrang feel they are a part of it. usually appears. Therefore, I have them. them to be a part of the rock lifestyle. decided to make Bibical not favour any different branches of rock music and involve them all every single issue.
  • 27. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? The contents page for rock sound is less chaotic than Kerrangs contents page and focuses on a few main points: the main image and the main features within the magazine. It does not have typical contents page features such as a letter from the editor, which is what makes it unique. However, I chose to make my contents page more like Kerrang as I feel it is a more successful in informing the audience, which is the purpose of a contents page.
  • 28. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? This is my contents page which I have included all the forms and conventions to allow it to be a successful at fulfilling it’s purpose. I have continued the colour scheme from the front cover on to the contents page to create a house style and make my magazine consistant throughout and as a result it is made more professional. They all work together to emphasise important points. I have used images on my contents page to make it look more full and to accompany the features. I took the idea from Kerrang to use an image at the top as the main point of interest on the contents page as I thought it made it look very interesting and professional. The image links with the genre of rock and it promotes the lifestyle as going to festivals is a part. Page numbers and list of features tells the audience what page everything is on and gives them some information which will make them want to find out more. Promoting the magazine even further as it is offering the audience to sign up to getting Biblical weekly, which will appeal to the people within the audience who are very passionate about rock music. • 29. Question 5 How did you attract/address your audience?
  • 30. How did you attract/address your audience? Banner Logos Masthead Feature/ Free giveaway Pug Features Image Sub heading/ Feature of magazine Heading Subheading/cover stars name Legal requirements- Bar code, date, price, issue number, website.
  • 31. How did you attract/address your audience? The masthead of my magazine the audience well in my opinion. This is because it is in a strong, bold colour that stands out against the background, catching their eye, the colour is not stereotypically specific to either males or females, so therefore it will appeal to both my primary and secondary audience. The font is sharp as it has pointed edges which links to the genre of rock as rock music is not considered ‘soft’ like pop music may be. The masthead is covered by the hair of my cover star, this will appeal to the audience as rock music is not considered ‘neat’ or ‘ tidy’ and the layout of the front cover reflects this. My cover star will appeal to the audience as she represents stereotypically what rock fans are like or aspire to be like. This is because of the brightly unnatural coloured hair, the piercings, the band merchandise and the tartan clothing. All link to the genre of music Biblical is about. She will appeal well whether the audience like her band, see her as a role model, or are attracted to her. Overall, she makes a good cover star which will help Biblical sell. The use of other bands and artists within the rock genre means that my audience is expanded. If someone does not like the main cover star, there are still alot more bands featured so something will be likely to appeal to them, so they buy my magazine.
  • 32. How did you attract/address your audience? Providing posters within the magazine attracts the audience as it provides them with ownership over something they are passionate about- in this case bands and rock music. It also gives them something for free with the magazine. Posters will attract certain fans if their favourite bands are on them, expanding the audience who are buying Biblical. The colour scheme I have used for the front cover uses a colour pallet of Grey, Red, Yellow, Black, and white. They all work with each other to ensure what needs to stand out does, to catch the eye of the audience to persuade them to buy the magazine. The grey background provides an interesting background that is not overpowering. It provides a good base for all the brighter colours to stand out on in contrast, for example the red masthead and the yellow banner. The yellow banner is a specific colour as it is the colour of Reading and Leeds festival, so it will stand out instantly and attract people who have attended or are planning on attending.
  • 33. How did you attract/address your audience? Heading Main image Picture caption logos Page numbers Picture of editor Banner Sub headings Letter from editor Features Advertisement Page numbers Buzz word Images Page number
  • 34. How did you attract/address your audience? Using pictures emphases the main articles within the magazine and draws the reader in. Pictures make the contents page more attractive to the eye. I have added pictures near or underneath text it is linked too, this adds more to the page and creates a more interesting contents page, it allows my magazine to be kept to the organised chaos style. The pictures link to the rock genre and the features within this issue of my magazine, so they will appeal to the readers. Competitions are a way for readers to get involved and a chance to win items that link to the rock genre. This allows them to be part of the lifestyle. The word “WIN!” is a buzz word which stands out, and therefore attracts the reader. It helps the magazine become more personal to the reader, which is another appealing factor. My magazine will contain competitions every week as I feel it is an important factor in attracting the audience.
  • 35. How did you attract/address your audience? By including an editors letter, and using words such as ‘you’ and phrases such as ‘see you next week’ it allows the reader to feel a personal connection. It makes them feel that they are a part of the magazine and get involved with what is happening with the creators. The editor also fits in with the audience as she looks the part with her coloured hair, expression and clothing. This creates a bond between the reader and editor as they will see her to be like them. I have used the same colour pallet on my contents page as I have the front cover. This is to keep a consistent house style throughout. The colours work well with each other and allow what needs to stand out, to do this. This is so the most important parts stand out to the reader.
  • 36. Question 6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  • 37. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Firstly I created the background for my magazine front cover. I decided on a white background that faded into light grey. I did this by making the background grey and then using the eraser tool to create a white circle that fades into grey. I added the banner at the top using the shape tool and made it yellow, added text with the text tool and added logos that link to it. I then added the masthead. I did not like the fonts on photoshop so I created it online and copied and pasted it onto my magazine.
  • 38. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? I then added the picture of my cover star. I did this by firstly removing the background by cutting round her with the magnetic lasso tool and then using the background eraser. I did the same with this image.
  • 39. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? I then added all the features by creating them with shape tools and text tools. I made sure everything on my magazine front cover was layered.
  • 40. Question 7 Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product?
  • 41. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Evaluation of my college magazine Front cover Technologies used: • Microsoft publisher • Adobe Photoshop • Digital camera
  • 42. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? PUGS I used pugs on my magazine front cover to put information on in an interesting way. This ensures my magazine is attractive to the eye and is appealing to the audience. It also allows offers to stand out for example I have put “Only ÂŁ1” in a yellow pug that looks like an explosion. This ensures the audience see it straight away and are persuaded to buy the magazine. Large, bold main feature I put the name of the cover star in a large bold font and cover to ensure it stands out in contrast to the background and ensures it is read by the audience. I have put the caption of the main image in a blue colour which stands out as it has only been used for this text, showing the audience it is part of the main feature. I have anchored the text over the main image to make my magazine cover interesting and to ensure the main image and the caption are obviously linked.
  • 43. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? I changed the colour of the first letter to make the masthead interesting and include more colours on my front cover. Also, the college uses this design for their logo, so by using it on my magazine it fits in with the college. Masthead Banners I used a banner at the top of my magazine to add some of the main features within on the front cover to grab the audiences attention. Features I put some of the features of my magazine on my front cover. This is to attract the audiences attention and anyone the features may appeal to. I also attempted to put them on my front cover in an imaginative way to make the front cover look better and catch peoples eye.
  • 44. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Colour scheme The colour scheme I used on this magazine is predominantly red. I did this because red connotes leadership and passion which are both positive connotations for a college magazine to have. The white background is used so the other colours and features on the front cover are emphasised to catch the audiences attention. I also included yellow and blue to emphasise important text even further and let the audience know that they should read it.
  • 45. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Photography The cover stars eyes are looking directly at the camera, therefore giving the audience eye contact which creates a personal link between them. It also connotes confidence which is appealing and will therefore make the audience want to find out more about her music. The cover star is smiling and looking happy giving the magazine a positive vibe. I made the main image have a white background on Adobe Photoshop which creates negative space and emphasises the cover star, text and all the other features. All the images I have used for my college magazine feature people in college themselves. Therefore, they are the same age as my target audience meaning the magazine wont come across as intimidating and the audience will beable to relate.
  • 46. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Choosing my photography I did not use this image as it has been taken near a corner so the lighting would not make my front cover look professional. Also the cover stars position is not directly at the camera but also not directly from the side so it would not be suited to a be the main image of magazine front cover. I chose this image for the front cover as the cover star will be the point of interest on my magazine cover as she is directly in the centre and is emphasised by a plain white background I added in on Adobe Photoshop. She is looking directly at the audience which helps portray her personality as confident which will link to the story as she is a musician. I did not use this image as it has a very busy background which would take the emphasis away from the text and other images on the magazine. Also the cover star falls directly in the right column so therefore it would not be suitable for a magazine front cover.
  • 47. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Contents Page Technologies used: • Microsoft publisher • Adobe Photoshop • Digital camera
  • 48. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? PUGS I used pugs on my contents page to again display information in an interesting way that would make my contents page more appealing to the eye. By using pugs on my contents page, the same colour and shape as the ones on my front page it creates a house style which makes my magazine professional as a whole. Page numbers and features This part of the contents page is the most important feature as it tells the reader where to find particular articles and what briefly what they are about. Therefore I tried to make it interesting to read by changing the font and text size to make it more interesting to read in comparison to a list using the same font and font size. Also, this makes my magazine unique as you normally do not find this in magazines.
  • 49. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Heading I have made the heading of the contents page the same font and colour as the masthead on the front cover. This is because I felt it worked well and made my magazine look interesting and link to the actual college itself. Also, by doing this I have created a house style and as a result making my magazine more professional. Letter from the editor I included a letter from the editor on the contents page of my magazine as I felt it would make the magazine seem more personal, by using words such as ‘you’ which would appeal to the reader. It also gives them a chance to become involved with the magazine.
  • 50. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Front page I feel I have improved from creating my college magazine front cover to making my music magazine front cover, and I have learned a lot of new skills during my production for example using Photoshop. I think a reason my music magazine front cover is a lot stronger than my college magazine is because I created all of it using Photoshop; whereas I only used Photoshop to edit pictures in my college magazine. By using a programme suited to the task it has resulted in me creating a more professional front cover. I feel if I created my college front cover with the skills I now have from making my music magazine front cover it would be a lot better than it is. The main thing I would change on my college magazine front cover is the colour scheme and use another main colour as well as red as I feel it is very plain on its own and I could make it stronger and more eye catching using 2 main colours. Overall, I am happy with how my Biblical magazine has turned out.
  • 51. Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product? Contents page I again feel like my contents page for my music magazine is a lot better than my contents page for my college magazine. I again used Photoshop for all my music magazine contents page and only to edit pictures on my college magazine contents page; and I think there is a significant difference. If I could change how I created my college magazine as a whole the main difference would definitely be using Photoshop over Microsoft Publisher. If I could go back and change my college contents page I would add a lot more features as I feel it is very plain and bare and I would also use a brighter, more eye catching colour scheme as I feel it does not live up to the expectations of a good contents page that will appeal to the audience. Overall, I am happy with my music magazine contents page as I feel it is very professional and would make a good contents page that would appeal to the target audience.
