The primary target audience for the media product would be males aged 15-22 who would find the attractive female protagonist Sam relatable. Females in the same age range would also be a target audience, finding Sam's strength and independence appealing. Overall, the film aims to attract a middle-class audience that is educated or working, with a BBFC 15 rating to reach more teens. Audience surveys were conducted online and with paper questionnaires to determine the target demographics.
1. Emma Bradshaw. Media Eval Q4
Q.4) Who would be the audience for your media
product?
Although I have touched up on this question in my other answers I and my groups’ primary audience
would be Males, from the ages of 15 to 22. Although we still find it acceptable and accruable for a
female audience to view Aura and by doing this be our target audience. The males viewing our film
would be attracted to our female character Sam as she is a good looking girl which is quite
protagonist, but also has sense of power and vulnerability when she is being haunted by our young
boy named Stephen. They also might find her attractive by the means the can associate her with
their friends, sisters or girlfriends, helping character create some familiarity within the plot and
situation seem almost realistic allowing the viewer to disbelief. The female target audience would be
attracted to Sam’s strong powerful independence nature, and her power she has over the men.
Other aspects of the film may appeal to this target audience is that they are all both young and
female, making her even more relatable, help making the plot line more engaging for the viewers
and increasing the fear factor by having the idea of such events happening to anyone. Although our
audience survey we gathered indicated that although men in our target age range preferred a male
actor, it also showed that they would find it more entertaining watching an attractive woman play
the main role of the film. Our group as a whole thought that most horror films appear to a male
audience, making us believe that we should do the same on adding to the steps of making it a
successful film.
Our whole film overall is aimed to attract a middle class audience, that is who our film represents.
Making our audience to be made up of lots of people who are either in education or working classed
jobs, meaning middle classed people is what our film is mostly aimed at. We also decided that the
best BBFC rating for our film aura would be a 15, as many teens who want to watch horror films
can’t either due to their age restrictions. So therefore we are hoping that this would help attract a
wider target audience by making it for a younger target audience rating to view. Whilst doing some
research we also found out that many people don’t like the idea of watching an age rated 18 films,
they think this because they believe it may be to disturbing or gruesome for them to watch, bring
the audience figures for the ages rated 18 films down.
To get all of this information we used 4 audience surveys total in my group which were online
questionnaires and paper questionnaires, each one being different to help get a clearer
understanding of what we were aiming for. From once finding out our target audience we used
paper questions to help gather information from people the correct age group to ask them what
they would like to see in a horror/ psychological film. Here are the results we gathered from our
paper audience research.
