This document proposes solutions called Mango and VillageNet to provide low-cost access to broadband services and rich content in rural India. Mango would use scalable, low-cost servers and content distribution to deliver popular content like music and movies through shops and cafes with backhaul connectivity. VillageNet would create a long-distance rural mesh network using inexpensive IEEE 802.11 radio equipment and point-to-point links between villages to expand broadband access, unlocking applications like telemedicine and distance education. These solutions aim to connect the hundreds of millions of mobile users in rural areas and fuel innovation.
