A Bonfire Night activity which introduces this festivity to our students.

1. BONFIRE NIGHT
NOVEMBER 5TH
Remember, remember, the fifth of November!
November 5th is an important day in the British calendar. Where does this celebration come from?
In 1603, James I became the new King of England. Not everybody in England liked him.
A man called Guy Fawkes and his friends wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with the King inside.
Guy and his friends knew about explosives. They wanted to put gunpowder in barrels in the basement of the Houses of Parliament on November the 5th, 1605.
The King received an anonymous letter about the plot.
On November 5th, guards found Guy Fawkes in the basement. The King and the Houses of Parliament were safe!
Every year on the 5th of November, British people remember the Gunpowder Plot. There are fireworks outside. They also light bonfires and they put a model of Guy Fawkes on top. It is a celebration of how his plan failed.
