The RepRap project is a thriving community that develops an open source 3D printer that fabricates not only arbitrary objects, but also the parts to make more 3D printers. Besides being interesting in itself, the project provides valuable indications of the impact of affordable digital production tools. I will show how a distributed community is enabled to collaboratively develop not only the software but also physical innovations and content, independent of manufacturers. I will also show how a commons of open source 3D content can emerge and how this further lowers the barriers for individuals to innovate and express themselves. It is exciting to see more and more individuals empowered to participate in this expanded scope of open source. Possibly, projects like the RepRap will revolutionize "making" not entirely unlike the PC and Linux have done for computing.

Information to our home. Physical design information: physical products to the home. Wouldn't it be great if we could almost 'cast a spell' or 'summon' a physical object?

If you could make a wish, what would you wish for? I would wish to forever get what I wished. Everyone would agree that having a machine that can make almost anything you can think of... this would be the ultimate gadget. Or perhaps, it will become an indispensable resource just as computers are now! Apple thought so too...

No, this it not cheese, though as a dutch person it would suit me if I tried to 3D print cheese. It's not cheese, but it does have holes. Lots of holes. And an odd shape. This is a typical part of a RepRap. The holes highlight the complexity that is possible.

Het proces dat hieraan ten grondslag licht is het repliceren. Op het niveau van de cel, maar ook het organisme. Maar al het mooie van de natuur is gebaseerd op informatie. De blangrijkste basis is in feite informatie, het DNA.
It usually is a blend of art, science or contains things that are just useful to print instead of going to the store.
If you melt the material that you use for fabrication and you want to produce every last part of the machine, you have a problem. Not if you go about it indirectly. Lost model casting. But be pragmatic. We're trying to get there in the end, by letting intermediate versions spread and be hacked by many different people. We're not trying to constrain diffusion of the device.
Modular or integrated?
White: from a Dimension, 1200 SST. Beige: from my RepRap Darwin with home-made microstepping XY-motion and microstepper based extrusion. The Statasys part is more constant across it's surfaces. The Stratasys machine has heavier axes and you can see an dampening oscillation across surfaces where one axis decelerates (just after taking a corner). The corners of the RepRapped object are slightly sharper.
Sanguino - Stemmed from the RepRap project Bumped into limitations More I/O pins, more memory Based on Arduino, reuses entire tool chain and is software compatible. Now uses outside RepRap project
Manufacturer would say, this could never be a product. The quality is awful. Resourceful user: I can now open the door, and this will do until the weekend when I buy a new door handle.

Het beste cadeau dat je kunt vragen...
All activity, feedback and encouragement is public. Anyone can participate, including those people that are key to bringing a project forward. (Joy's Law) Alters the make versus buy decision: Mass production: great for one size fits all. Need heterogeneity. Expensive products or under provisioned market. Make / Download and tailor / Buy
