I. CONTEXTUAL FACTORS
MDD Standard
· The teacher candidate collects data regarding the institutional and classroom
contexts, the characteristics of the pupils as a group and its diversity, using this
information to plan and deliver instruction.
Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or
owner and school factors:
Learners are first year students of English Pedagogy at “Universidad Católica de la Santisima
Concepción”. This college is located in San Andres area in Concepción City, specifically in
Alonso de Ribera street -2850. It is a private and traditional college founded by Arquidiócesis de
la Santísima Concepción. Moreover, it is ascribed to “Consejo de Rectores de las Universidades
Chilenas”. Besides, this college houses 7.778 students with a variety in socioeconomic profiles
and ethnicity. Students who want to study at this university must take the national exam PSU and
then they could apply for the different undergraduate degree that this college offers. In addition,
the college is accredited, it allows many students from the country to study and pursue a career
with the help of scholarships given by the state. UCSC also offers scholarships abroad and
exchange programs. Otherwise, this university is considered one of the best of the country in the
Education area, therefore, attracts students with good academic performance.
1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons: the environment that is
present in the university is with students that are interest in learning because they are
1
mature and are studying because they want to become teachers. It will have a positive
impact because we will have students interested in learning and focus in the lesson.
2.Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications: Below,
describe how two student characteristics you observed in your student (e.g., gender,
race/ethnicity, interests, student skill levels) might impact the way you instruct
those students. For example, your planning, motivation, management, or
assessment. For each example of the student characteristic, give a specific
instructional implication that will influence how you plan and implement your
instruction.
Students came from different high schools at different locations. Due to this, they present some
differences in term of level of proficiency in language. In general, most of the students present a
positive attitude during the lesson. They participate actively paying attention to the teacher during
the whole lesson. Even though there are differences in the ability of use of the language, the
average is very advanced taking into account that they are just in first year.
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
One of the most significant characteristics of Communicative Competence students is their
interest in participate that is demonstrated during the lesson. Their level of motivation is quite
clear, this is reflected in the questions that they ask to the teacher. Moreover, dedication can be
appreciate when they perform activities such as oral presentations, role-plays even, a lesson
simulation in which some of them performed as teachers. Students demonstrate that they want to
participate in classes showing the motivation to learn English. Nevertheless, we think that one of
the most important factors is that the teacher achieves motivation in them.
When giving instruction: student will be focus listening instruction. It will facilitate
comprehension and they are going be able to ask if they do not understand something.
2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
This Characteristic will impact positively on the development of our lesson. We know that if there
is no motivation the possibilities of having an effective learning are more limited. However,
willingness to learn that this students have will help them to front the learning process better and
eventually with good results. In relation to the teaching process, we know that students will
participate respectfully during the course of the class. They will contribute with ideas and will
show interest in learning. This will make it easier to plan an effective lesson.
2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:
Another students` characteristic that is easy to observe is that the result of team work is totally
effective in them. It is noteworthy that they communicate effectively with peers showing respect
each other, even though they are in the process of leveling the language and they have different
levels of proficiency. It is shown in the fact that students are able to maintain harmony in the
classroom and when they perform an activity they can capture all the information, make decisions,
agreements and present good results showing that they have learned. Although these students do
not know so much each other they can work effectively independent of whom they are working
with.
When giving instruction: it will help students to support each other after giving instructions
because if any of the member of the group do not understand their classmates are going to explain
the instructions.
2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
Teamwork will positively influence the development of our lesson. This characteristic will allow
students to support each other and reduce the fear of facing learning. Also it creates enthusiasm to
learn and will foster communication. In relation to learning, it has positive impact because when
working in a satisfactorily way the results are very beneficial. In addition, this will make it easier
to monitor the work that is being done.
1. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:
3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
One of the physical aspects of the classroom is the seating arrangement of the students. This is U-shaped
positioned at least in two rows. The teacher can move comfortably around the room while
explaining or speaking. Students look face to face this way comfort can be appreciate in the
classroom.
3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
This will impact positively on the learning process in our lesson. While it is necessary for
students to develop the speaking skill, also it is necessary to reduce their fear and embarrassment
in front of their peers. Look face to face realizing that everyone hears helps them to develop
teaching characteristics, such as talking to the public, manage the tone of voice and reduce
anxiety. This arrangement in the class will help us to monitor our students comfortably without
difficulty to move.
3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:
Another physical aspect of the classroom is the technologic recourses present in there.
Using the data in the classroom is a resource widely used by the teacher and students. It
helps to present videos, ppts, Papers, presentations etc. It's fast and easy to use resource
that captures student’s attention. Furthermore, this is complemented with laptops and
audio to develop virtual activities.
3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
The use of technology will help us to develop in a easy way our lesson. With the use of these
technologic recourses we will have the possibility to prepare our material with a big amount of
time. We will make it attractive and we can include videos and audios to make our lesson funnier
for the students.
Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to provide quality
teaching
First of all, the importance of knowing about the context of students is that the process of
construct knowledge begins with people and the community. Every community constructs, defines people
and helps people to resolve problems. Another important thing is students need to know their sociocultural
context that they are involved.
Secondly, the culture and the context are really important for people, because they supported
themselves for it. Students construct meaning through experience and interactions with other
students. For that reason, culture and individual development are extremely connected, all of
them are essential in terms of what people understand and what people know.
Besides, for teachers are really necessary to be aware about the context in which students are
involved, because they will know to plan the lessons appropriately, according to the students’
needs. Even more, it is considered in the plan that all the activities and resources must be related
to the context, because the learning has to be meaningful and useful in real life.
