Yes, there was controversy when it was created.
Some people agreed that the government should
put together a national health care plan. But, on
the other hand some felt that it was communism
to an extent.
Yes, medicare is controversial but it is not
mainstream in the media today. One thing that is
debated is the new prescription drug plan, and
the private insurance companies can come up
with an expensive price. Some even claim that it
was created to boost sales for pharmaceutical
corporations.
1965- provide federal health for Americans 65 and
older and ones in need.
1972- expanded to provide health insurance
benefits to those under 65 with long-term
disabilities and those with end stage renal
disease.
1987- Medicare Protection Act made to reduce
fraud and to provide better patient advocacy.
2003- Prescription Drug Improvement Act waent
in to effect in 2006.
 U.S. department of health and human services
 Medicare cost varies by year, the most recent
number is 536 billion.
 All states participate
 Medicare is funded by Fica. 6.2% of all
paychecks fund Medicare through taxes.
Medicare is a federally administered program
that, is ran by the Department of Health and
Services.
Paid for my two trust fund accounts, which are
only allowed to be used for medicare. These two
funds are payroll taxes, and also income taxes
paid by Social Security benefits.
