Establishing procedures within the first few days of class is essential in order to establish a comfortable learning environment where students know and understand teacher and class expectations. I show this slideshow on the first day to briefly go over procedures. I also post these procedures/expectations on a bulletin board for the first weeks of school.

4. Who is a journalist?
This is what a journalist looks like
Someone who always likes to know what is going on
Someone who likes to find answers to questions
Someone who is good at writing
Someone who likes to work at their own pace, and
does whatever they need to do to get their job done
6. Arrival to Class
When you enter the classroom please make
your way to your assigned seat.
Prepare yourself for the class by making sure
your pencil is sharpened and you have all your
journalism supplies.
Be SEATED!
7. When Class Begins (Bell)
The bell ringing = class begins. You should be
quiet.
Copy the agenda in your agenada.
Put CW and HW
Get your folder from the crate.
Begin Starter from the board
There should be no talking or moving around
during the starter.
8. Expectations
Please give the teacher your full attention –
pens/pencils down and face me – no talking.
Please wait to be recognized by the teacher
before you begin speaking.
Do not start assignments until the teacher
gives you the signal to begin.
Do not yell out, walk up to the teacher, or walk
around. Raise your hand.
Allow others to finish speaking before you
start speaking.
Work hard – Your writing may be published on
the Internet and in a Newspaper.
9. “Team Work” procedures
You will be assigned to a team for some of
your weekly writing.
No side-bar conversations during team
activities, all team members should be focused
on the task at hand – no wasting time!
Talking to each other should be no louder than
a whisper. The person sitting on the other side
of the room should not be interrupted by your
noise.
If I raise my hand, you are to stop talking, face
me, and also raise your hand until everyone in
the classroom has stopped talking and I lower
my hand.
10. End of Class Dismissal
I will inform you when it is time for class
dismissal.
I will then give you permission to leave the
classroom.
11. Behavior Discipline
Procedures
1st Offense – Name on board as a warning
2nd Offense – Check by name
3rd Offense – 2nd check by name – call principal –
call home - after school detention
4th Offense – 3rd check – call principal again –
principal consequence
12. School Rules and Policies
Attendance policy – if you are not in the door
when the bell rings, you are tardy. 3 tardies = a
referral.
All school rules as outlined in your student
handbook will be enforced.
1. Bring all necessary materials to class.
2. No food or drink allowed.
3. Always act and speak in an appropriate way.
4. Always carry your supplies
5. No backpacks, no cell phones, appropriate dress code.
