1. 5 steps to optimise your site for search
engines
Make your pages
Pay attention to Keep the design Make your site accessible in as Do your keyword
your content simple yet neat spider friendly few clicks as research
possible
2. Pay attention to your
content
• Make sure your content is:
– Relevant (if you’re a travel website don’t talk about
politics unless its related to travel)
– Informative (when people read your content, they should
go “oh, that’s interesting! These guys know their stuff”)
– Readable (Remember, you don’t need to show
your language skills!! Keep the language as simple
as you can, avoid Jargon)
– Don’t use Ctrl C, Ctrl V, or Ctrl X
3. Keep the design simple yet neat
• When designing your site:
– Stress on visibility of links (Remember, websites
are mainly dependent on visual management)
– Organise by importance (ensure that the first
thing seen is the most important)
– Don’t use too heavy graphics (Asides from taking
time to load, heavy graphics don’t impress.
Especially if someone’s viewing from a smart
phone )
4. Don’t forget to feed the spider
• All search engines use spiders, make sure you
feed the spider with information
– Label all your images with relevant names (Spiders
can’t see images, they take your word for it!)
– Make sure all the pages have links on the main
page (Spiders need to be directed, if they don’t
find a link, they may not look for it)
5. Make your pages accessible in as few
clicks as possible
• If your pages are too deep, it becomes difficult
to access all your data hence you loose points
for accessibility
• Search engines prefer sites where data can be
found easily
6. Keywords are key
• Its important to use keywords in your site
– These are words which are most often used by
people who are searching for related sites
– The more keywords you use, the better the
chances of the search engine matching your site
to the search, hence better rank
– Beware though, Google themselves say that too
many keywords could be a recipe for getting
blacklisted – if they’re not relevant
