1. CAPITAL
PUNISHMENT
Presented by: Fahad Bokhari 09-
2. The Death Penalty
• When someone is on
Death-row, they are
held in cells until it is
their time to be
executed for
committing horrible
crimes.
3. History of the Punishment
• First recorded death penalty:
Code of Hammurabi.
• Brought to U.S. by Britain
when colonized.
• Penalty under constant
scrutiny.
4. History Cont…
• 1972 death penalty
suspended: statutes
considered “cruel
and unusual”
• States rewrote
statutes to eliminate
the problem
5. FORMS OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
Many different types of execution including
• BEHEADING
• LETHEL INJECTION
• POISON
• ELECTRIFICATION
• GUILLOTINE
• SHOOTING(DEATH BY FIRING SQUAD)
• DEATH BY STONING
• HANGING
6. Compassion?…No
• Many people believe it is unethical to execute
someone and that it’s an injustice. I disagree,
the death penalty is a crime deterrent, gives
families retribution for loved ones, and helps
prevent recidivism. It would be an injustice to
abolish the penalty.
7. The theories of punishment ; why does
the State punish criminals?
1. Vengeance
2. Retribution
3. Deterrence
4. Incapacitation
8. VENGEANCE
• Human emotion that is normal in family
members of murder victims, but it can never be
used to justify a public policy given that policies
are supposed to be based on reason and
empirical science.
9. Retribution
• If someone in your
family were
murdered, would you
want that person to
be punished?
• I would.
10. Deterrent
• If people don’t have
anything to fear they
will do as they please.
Capital punishment
makes people think
twice.
11. Incapacitation
• Taking away a person's freedom so that he or
she cannot commit another crime.
• The ultimate form of incarceration is death.
12. Recidivism
• When a dog gets into
the hen house it has
to be put down
because it will
continue to do it.
• Could the same not
apply to humans?
13. Examples of Capital Punishment
Assassination of political personalities
• President of Iraq Saddam Hussain
• Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfiqar
Ali Bhutto
• Socrates
14. Conclusion
• The death penalty has been a very
controversial issue through the
decades.
Capital punishment is the only effective way to
deter crime.
• The Federal government has regulated the
use of the death penalty in the past.
Now it is up to the individual state whether they
want to use it. In the future, it should be
mandatory throughout the entire country.
• What, if anything, would it take to change
your mind on the death penalty?
15. Solution
The best solution to stopping the injustice of
putting an end to capital punishment is to go
out and vote for the legislatures that keep it
running.
