TOPIC: WATER TREATMENT FOR DOMESTIC WATER SUPPLIES
Water Pollution
• safe and pleasant to drink
• major health risks if contain harmful
i. chemicals
ii. microorganisms.
INSTALLATION PROCESS FOR
HOUSEHOLD WATER SUPPLY
Installation Process
Step 1- Coagulation
To removes dirt and other particles suspended in water.
Alum and other chemicals are added to water to form
tiny sticky particles called "floc" which attract the dirt
particles. The combined weight of the dirt and the alum
(floc) become heavy enough to sink to the bottom
during sedimentation.
Utilizes gravity to sepparated suspended solid from water. “Floc” settles
by gravity to the bottom of a sedimentation basin. Then, clean water
spills over to the filter.
Step 2- Sedimentation
Step 3- Filtration
The water passes through filters, some made of layers of sand, gravel,
and charcoal that help remove even smaller particles.
Step 4- Disinfection
A small amount of chlorine is added or some other disinfection method
is used to kill any bacteria or microorganisims that may be in the water.
Step 5- Storage
Water is placed in a closed tank or reservoir in order for disinfection to
take place. The water then flows through pipes to homes and
businesses in the community.
FLOC
• a collection of smaller particles agglomerating into
larger particles containing particulate matter, debris,
bacteria and Bio-polymers.
Management System
Why?
• to remove chemicals, particulates (e.g., soot and silt)
and bacteria
• Provide clean drinking water supply
• indoor and outdoor household purposes
• Affect human health
Biological Sand Filters
 Sand layer develops as bio-layer
 consist of colonic beneficial bacteria and algae
 attack water-borne pathogens
 backwashing the filter once every two to four weeks
 replacement of the top layer of sand with new sand
Water Distiller
require regular cleaning
cleaning frequency depends on the type of water being treated.
remove chlorine, so when testing for chlorine residual, draw the
sample ahead of the distiller.
Reverse Osmosis Units
designed for use on very high quality feed water
5- micron and the granular carbon filters require
replacement at least four times per year
osmosis method
Ultraviolet Light Disinfection
most effective treatments
working principle simple and involves no chemicals.
UV light destroys all impurities present in water
under the Kitchen/Utility sink.
CASE STUDY
Background
• Was first established in Korea in 1989
• Coway has been dedicated to researching and developing
environmental solution, particularly wellness appliances and general
living standards.
• A market leader in the manufacture and distribution of home
wellness appliances with main focus on health and well-being
• Was introduced to the Malaysian market in 2006
• Position itself as the brand that cares for your health
and the environment with the tagline “We Bring
Wellness”
• Providing 100% eco-friendly home appliances for your
well-being
• Now, there are more than 40,000 customers in
Malaysia and still rapidly growing
Unique Competitive Advantages of COWAY
• Combination of innovative design
• High-technology manufacturing
• Collaboration with their partners
and customers
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
• Reverse Osmosis is one of the water treatment system adopted by
Coway
• To desalinate water which is turning sea or brackish water into
drinking water
Advantages and Disadvantages
No. Advantages Disadvantages
1
RO system eliminate all heavy metals that
harmful to health like lead, mercury, selenium,
animal wastes and chemicals
RO system de-mineralizas water and drinking de-
mineralized water on a regular basis may cause
digestive problems and nutritional deficiencies.
2
RO system remove 99% bacteria and pyrogenic
substances in water which is ideal for patient
suffer from heart disease
For every one gallon of water that is clean,
anywhere from half a gallon to five gallons is
wasted.
3
RO systems remove dissolved materials and
other contaminants that cause water to smell
unpleasant, and look odd
RO system costs more to maintain and it costs
more to operate than other more efficient systems.
4
RO water filters remove even the smallest
particles from drinking water but other method
do not remove particles of inorganic pollutants
like metals and chemicals
Any chemicals that are smaller size than water such
as pesticides, can pass through the RO membrane.
5
A reverse osmosis purifier has membrane filters
can last a long time
Minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium,
which are necessary for bone development and
cardiovascular function, are being removed.
WATER QUALITY PROBLEMS

RECOMMENDATION FOR
FUTURE IMPROVEMENT
Nanotechnology water purification
Nanotechnology are the study and application of
extremely small things and can be used across all the
other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics,
materials science, and engineering.
have incredibly large surface
areas and can be more easily
cleaned by back-flushing
desalination process more
efficient, affordable, and available
to more people
less pressure is required to pass
water across the filter
prevents even the smallest
viruses getting through, and
eliminates the need for
chemicals to treat the water
Cow Manure
Known as the McLanahan Nutrient Separation
Manure is mostly made of water
This system is a contraption that takes waste,
such as manure, and produces energy as a
byproduct – and couples it with an ultrafiltration,
air stripping and a reverse osmosis system.
One cow can able to produce up to 10 thousand gallons of manure a year’’
Cows could be producing nearly 900,000 gallons of clean water or more annually.
This technology also may turn water into another renewable resources by feeding it
back to livestock to reproduce manure!
The LifeStraw
LifeStraw
LifeStraw filters 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.99% of protozoa which
is also means that any kind of water source is able to be consumed
safely!
 Also filters a minimum of 1000 liters (264 gallons of water
Versatility, Efficiency and Affordable!

Alum and other chemicals are added to water to form tiny sticky particles called "floc" which attract the dirt particles. The combined weight of the dirt and the alum (floc) become heavy enough to sink to the bottom during sedimentation.

  • 12. Step 4- Disinfection A small amount of chlorine is added or some other disinfection method is used to kill any bacteria or microorganisims that may be in the water.
  • 13. Step 5- Storage Water is placed in a closed tank or reservoir in order for disinfection to take place. The water then flows through pipes to homes and businesses in the community.
  • 14. FLOC • a collection of smaller particles agglomerating into larger particles containing particulate matter, debris, bacteria and Bio-polymers.
  • 16. Why? • to remove chemicals, particulates (e.g., soot and silt) and bacteria • Provide clean drinking water supply • indoor and outdoor household purposes • Affect human health
  • 17. Biological Sand Filters  Sand layer develops as bio-layer  consist of colonic beneficial bacteria and algae  attack water-borne pathogens  backwashing the filter once every two to four weeks  replacement of the top layer of sand with new sand
  • 18. Water Distiller require regular cleaning cleaning frequency depends on the type of water being treated. remove chlorine, so when testing for chlorine residual, draw the sample ahead of the distiller.
  • 19. Reverse Osmosis Units designed for use on very high quality feed water 5- micron and the granular carbon filters require replacement at least four times per year osmosis method
  • 20. Ultraviolet Light Disinfection most effective treatments working principle simple and involves no chemicals. UV light destroys all impurities present in water under the Kitchen/Utility sink.

  • 25. Unique Competitive Advantages of COWAY • Combination of innovative design • High-technology manufacturing • Collaboration with their partners and customers
  • 26. Reverse Osmosis (RO) • Reverse Osmosis is one of the water treatment system adopted by Coway • To desalinate water which is turning sea or brackish water into drinking water
  • 27. Advantages and Disadvantages No. Advantages Disadvantages 1 RO system eliminate all heavy metals that harmful to health like lead, mercury, selenium, animal wastes and chemicals RO system de-mineralizas water and drinking de- mineralized water on a regular basis may cause digestive problems and nutritional deficiencies. 2 RO system remove 99% bacteria and pyrogenic substances in water which is ideal for patient suffer from heart disease For every one gallon of water that is clean, anywhere from half a gallon to five gallons is wasted. 3 RO systems remove dissolved materials and other contaminants that cause water to smell unpleasant, and look odd RO system costs more to maintain and it costs more to operate than other more efficient systems. 4 RO water filters remove even the smallest particles from drinking water but other method do not remove particles of inorganic pollutants like metals and chemicals Any chemicals that are smaller size than water such as pesticides, can pass through the RO membrane. 5 A reverse osmosis purifier has membrane filters can last a long time Minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium, which are necessary for bone development and cardiovascular function, are being removed.
  • 30. Physical • “Rotten egg” taste and unpleasant odor • Causes black stains on silverware and fixtures Taste and Odor • Turbidity- undesirable for health • Highly discolored water • Stain on household fixtures Turbidity and color
  • 31. Biological • Range from ultra-small viruses to bacteria and large protozoa • Cause disease e.g: typhoid, dysentery Pathogenic organisms
  • 32. Chemical • Caused by magnesium and calcium • Hard water deposits scale inside pipes • Water becomes acidic in low hardness level Hardness • Excess ferric iron creates havoc in plumbing systems • Give metallic taste to food Iron Scale deposit
  • 33. Chemical • Cause bitter metallic taste to food and water • Stimulate growth of bacteria in tanks, filters • Stains on plumbing fixtures and laundry Manganese • Accelerate corrosion of pipes, boilers and fixtures • Impart a salty taste Chloride
  • 34. Chemical • Harmful to health(respiratory system) • Cause shortness of breath& heart attack Nitrates • Corrosive water leach from pipes into drinking water & creating metallic taste Acidic water and lead
  • 35. Chemical • Yellowing of teeth • Damage to spinal cord Fluoride • Colourless, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas • Risk of developing internal organs cancer Radon
  • 38. Nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering.
  • 39. have incredibly large surface areas and can be more easily cleaned by back-flushing desalination process more efficient, affordable, and available to more people less pressure is required to pass water across the filter prevents even the smallest viruses getting through, and eliminates the need for chemicals to treat the water
  • 41. Known as the McLanahan Nutrient Separation Manure is mostly made of water This system is a contraption that takes waste, such as manure, and produces energy as a byproduct – and couples it with an ultrafiltration, air stripping and a reverse osmosis system. One cow can able to produce up to 10 thousand gallons of manure a year’’ Cows could be producing nearly 900,000 gallons of clean water or more annually. This technology also may turn water into another renewable resources by feeding it back to livestock to reproduce manure!
  • 43. LifeStraw LifeStraw filters 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.99% of protozoa which is also means that any kind of water source is able to be consumed safely!  Also filters a minimum of 1000 liters (264 gallons of water Versatility, Efficiency and Affordable!
