1. Imagine that you are a news reporter for a big TV station. You
have an exclusive story about the discovery by New Zealand
scientists of a new element.
It is now your job to tell people all about it. Things to be
included in your report are:
• The name and symbol of
this new element
• Mass number and
atomic number
• The group it belongs to
• State at room
temperature
• Colour
• What can we use it for
• How it was discovered
• Who discovered it
You may also like to use comments from an interview with the
scientists in your report.

2. Produce a written version of your report that could appear in a
newspaper or magazine. You may like to include some pictures.
In small groups, work on your news reading and interviewing
skills in preparation for a live broadcast on the evening news.
