Selma, Alabama was the site of civil rights marches in 1965 where Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife led a march from Selma to Montgomery to advocate for voting rights for all, but marchers were beaten by police when they reached the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Now people commemorate the march each year by walking the 12 mile route from Selma to Montgomery.
