               Liver and Gallbladder

Overview
Your liver is the largest organ inside your body. It is
also one of the most important. The liver has many
jobs, including changing food into energy and
cleaning alcohol and poisons from the blood. Your
liver also makes bile, a yellowish-green liquid that
helps with digestion.

                                                          1
Overview
There are many kinds of liver diseases. Viruses
cause some of them, like hepatitis A, hepatitis B
and hepatitis C. Others can be the result of
drugs, poisons or drinking too much alcohol. If the
liver forms scar tissue because of an illness, it's
called cirrhosis. Jaundice, or yellowing of the
skin, can be one sign of liver disease.

                                                      2
Overview
Your gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ under your
liver. It stores bile, a fluid made by your liver to
digest fat. As your stomach and intestines digest
food, your gallbladder releases bile through a tube
called the common bile duct. The duct connects
your gallbladder and liver to your small intestine.

                                                       3
Overview
Your gallbladder is most likely to give you trouble if
something blocks the flow of bile through the bile
ducts. That is usually a gallstone. Signs of a
gallstone attack may include nausea, vomiting, or
pain in the abdomen, back, or just under the right
arm.

                                                         4
Overview
Many gallbladder problems get better with
removal of the gallbladder. Fortunately, the
gallbladder is an organ that you can live without.
Bile has other ways of reaching your small
intestine.
